The Greene County
Lady Tigers lost a couple
of non-region games last
week, including a 34-19 loss
to rival Putnam County on
the road.
The Lady War Eagles
vaulted to a 6-0 lead over
the Lady Tigers in the
first period after Ebony
Hargrove snuck in behind
the Greene County defense
and scored from under the
basket.
Shawdaja Armour got the
Lady Tigers on the board
with a foul shot just before
the first period ended, but
Putnam County increased
its lead to 8-1 when Hailey
Hyman broke free for a shot
close to the basket.
Tymia Dixon stole the ball
and scored on a layup to get
the Lady Tigers within a
point at 8-7. But Hargrove
scored a layup and made
a foul shot to give Putnam
County a 4-point cushion at
the half.
By the end of the third
period, the Lady Tigers
trailed 24-13.
Hargrove scored 11 of her
game high 16 points in the
second half.
Hyman was also in double
figures with 11 points. The
Lady War Eagles got the
line 23 times, but only made
nine of the freebies.
Chaffin led the scoring
for Greene County with 6
points. Tymia Dixon had 5
and Jamiyah Rhodes had 4.
The Lady Tigers were
without perhaps their most
effective post player in
Tri’Ceria Dunn who missed
the game with a knee injury.
Coach Williams said that
Dunn would have endured
excruciating pain in her
knee had she played.
Despite the loss, Williams
was able to connect with
family in Eatonton. Her
father Johnny Williams
is the head coach of the
Putnam County boys team
and her uncle Jack Williams
is the athletic director at the
school.
The Lady Tigers began the
week at home against West
Hall, but the young squad
coach Shondra Williams is
putting on the floor has thus
far had trouble scoring the
ball.
West Hall won that game
51-23. Anna McKendree
scored 12 points to lead
West Hall.
Marquesha Mallory led
the Lady Tigers with 6
points. Keiaundra Chaffin
had four.
The Lady Tigers didn’t
shoot well from the line,
making only three of 13 foul
shots.
Despite the early strug
gles, Williams remains
upbeat about her team’s
chances when region play
gets started just before
Christmas with a game
against Union County.

In the space of less than
a week, the Greene County
Tigers have gone from
looking lost to looking legit
imate.
The Tigers outscored
Putnam County 17-9 in the
third period and survived
a furious fourth period
comeback attempt to
prevail 62-58 and win their
first game of the season.
“We are a completely dif
ferent team than what we
were a week ago,” Greene
County head coach Cory
Hunter said. “It’s just a
growing process. I’m only
bringing back two people
who dressed out a year
ago. We’ve still got a lot of
growing to do. We have a lot
of young guys and we played
12 or 13 people tonight.
Until we get a solid group
down, we’ll keep doing
that. I’m just glad we got
that monkey off our back.
Practice is always tough
and attitudes are always on
edge until you see that you
can win.”
Both teams played fast
and intense from the outset
with Greene County getting
on top early 7-4.
Putnam’s Christopher
Reid knocked down a long
jumper from the wing, and
David Levester made a
foul shot as the War Eagles
evened the score.
Devin Wynn drove to the
basket and dropped in a
layup to put Greene County
back up by 2.
Arthur Porter got the
Tigers up by 4 with a
bucket and Aquil Alexan
der knocked down a shot at
the baseline to give Greene
County a 13-7 lead heading
into the second period.
The Tigers went on a
7-3 run to start the second
quarter and build a 20-10
lead, but they had 10 fouls.
The War Eagles went
to the line nine times but
made only four of the shots.
The War Eagles fought
their way back into the
game in the second period
with the trey. Stefan
Waller knocked down two
3-pointers and the War
Eagles by one 1 point.
The Tigers scored the
next 4 points on two free
throws by Anton Kilpatrick
and a nice feed from Arthur
Porter to Quindarious
Champion.
With less than a minute
to play in the first half, Reid
scored a layup and Waller
then scored a layup off a
steal to cut the lead to 1.
With 19 seconds left,
Waller drained another
t3-pointer that put the War
Eagles up 28-26.
With time running out
Porter answered with a
3-ball of his own, and the
Tigers took a slender 29-28
lead into the locker room.
The Tigers kept sending
Putnam County to the line
in the third period, averag
ing about a foul per minute,
but the War Eagles couldn’t
take advantage, making
only one of nine free throws.
Dylan Parrett put in a
layup and Aquil Alexander
and Porter hit 3-pointers to
put the Tigers up 39-30.
By the end of the third
period, Green County led
46-36.
Porter hit yet another
3-pointer early in the fourth
period that put Greene
County up by 11.
Greene County went to
the foul line 16 times in the
fourth period and made
nine.
But after falling behind
58-44 at one point, the
War Eagles got on a roll
and scored 6 unanswered
points.
With 22 seconds left, Al
exander knocked down a
pair of free throws that put
the final nails in the coffin
for Putnam which trailed
61-52.
The War Eagles didn’t
quit, though. Reid hit a pair
of 3-pointers at the end but
it wasn’t enough.
Reid led the War Eagles
with 20 points, while Waller
scored 12, including three
3-point shots. Harris had
five. Marcus Bonner had six.
Porter led Greene County
with 17 points, including
three treys, and Alexander
had 16 points and two treys.
Despite a somewhat slow
start, the last two games
have given Hunter a degree
of optimism.
“Although we are a young
team, I think come time for
region play we can make
a good run for it,” Hunter
said.

Clockwise from top, it appears Malike Barnhart will have to fight the entire Putnam
County team for this rebound; Anton Kilpatrick looks for a shot under the basket;
Devin Wynn drives past Putnam's Mykelti Pennamon.
