Mr. James Otis Nelson, 59,
departed this life Saturday,
Nov. 28, 2015 in Athens
Regional Medical Center,
Athens.
A celebration of life service
was conducted Dec. 2 at St.
John AME Church with Rev.
Wayne Griffin, Sr. pastor of
ficiating. Burial followed in
the East Eatonton Cemetery.
Mr. Nelson was born in
Putnam County on Aug. 17,
1956 to the parentage of the
late John Olin Nelson Sr.
and Louvenia Few Nelson.
He received his education from the Putnam County school
system where he graduated in 1974. He was a member of
the Sons of the American Legion and a member of St. John
A.M.E. Church where he actively served until he passed
away.
James was a fun-loving person who greatly enjoyed people.
He never missed an opportunity to socialize, fellowship, and
make new friends. We can image that he has already made
friends with lots and lots of people in heaven already.
James had very strong work ethics. He began his work
experience at Enterprise Aluminum Co., where he was
employed for 12 years until the company closed. He then
began working at Fortsman and worked there until they
closed their doors. Afterwards, he gained employment with
Rheem Manufacturing where he remained until the plant
relocated. Lastly, he was employed by Anthony and worked
there faithfully until the onset of his illness.
James was preceded in death by his father and a younger
brother Harold Lee Nelson.
He is survived by his mother, Louvenia Nelson; sisters;
Queen (Willie) Oliver and Louella (J.C.) Mathis, all of
Eatonton; two brothers John O. (Brenda) Nelson Jr., of
Eatonton, and Alfred (Kim) Nelson, of Rex; two aunts
Deloris (Ulysses) Farley and Helen Few; and a host of nieces,
nephews, cousins and many, many friends.
Hurt’s Funeral Home of Eatonton had charge of arrange
ments.
James Rhodes
Dec. 7, 2015
Mr. James Jefferson Rhodes, Jr., age 94, passed away
on Dec. 7, 2015. Funeral Services will be conducted
on Thursday, Dec. 10, 2015 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of
Williams Funeral Home in Milledgeville with the Rev.
Larry Glover officiating. Entombment will follow in
Baldwin Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Rhodes was a native of Laurens County and had
made his home in Putnam County. He was the son of the
late James Jefferson Rhodes and Gladys Lavender Rhodes
and was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby Rhodes.
Mr. Rhodes had worked for Georgia Power and was a
member of Rising Star Lodge No. 4 Free and Accepted
Masons.
He is survived by his wife, Juanita Addleton Rhodes, of
Eatonton; daughters, Cindy (Wayne) DuPree, of Dahlone-
ga, and Patty (Sammy) Wooten, of Eatonton; a son, Craig
(Michelle) Rhodes, of Eatonton; sister, Betty Sego, of
Macon; grandchildren, Charlie Gardner, Jimmy Gardner,
Cindy Griner, Dusty DuPree, Tony Rhodes, Teresa Doster,
Brian Wooten, Lane Coleman, Pelar Addison, Austin
Coleman and Colby Coleman; and 13 great grandchildren
also survive.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made
to Crossroads Baptist Church Building Fund.

Douglas Lee “Doug”
Huff, of Union Point, died
on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015
at his residence at the age
of 62. Born in Athens on
Jan. 27, 1953 he was the
son of the late Ralph Cor
nelius Huff and Dorothy
Jeanette Harwell Huff.
His early childhood was
spent in Woodville and
later they moved to Baird-
stown. Doug graduated
from Greene County High
School.
On Nov. 27, 1987 he married Susan Channell from
Union Point. He worked as a service technician for Tri
County Natural Gas.
Doug enjoyed working on small engines, fishing and
being with his family, especially his grandchildren. He
was a member of the First United Methodist Church of
Union Point.
In addition to his wife Susan Channell Huff of Union
Point, he is survived by a son, Sam Huff of Union Point;
daughter, Amanda Rainey (Wesley), of Madison; and
step-daughter, Shannon Edgeworth of Decatur; two
sisters, Jeanette Meadows and Berdine Wray; a brother
Russell Huff (Joann); four grandchildren, Hayden
Rainey, Blake Huff, Courtney Edgeworth and Alliyah
Armstrong; and other relatives and many friends. He
was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Kimsey
Huff, and infant granddaughter, Kallie Elizabeth Rainey.
Memorial Services were held Dec. 7 at First United
Methodist Church, Union Point, with Rev. Bert Mathews
and Rev. Dr. Francis Ford officiating. The family received
friends at Callaway Funeral Horn. Interment followed
service at Bairds Baptist Church Cemetary, Bairdstown.
Serving as honorary pallbearers were Wendell Mathews,
Gene Bray, Greg Mathews, Wayne Jackson, Scott
Hubbard and Lowell Harrison.

Mrs. Berdice Hood Hurt,
age 77, departed this life
Monday, Nov. 30, 2015 at
Bibb County Medical in
Macon.
Funeral services for Mrs.
Berdice Hood Hurt, age 77,
were held Dec. 5, 2015 at
The Plaza Art Center, 305
N. Madison Ave., Eatonton
with Rev. Hillman Graves,
officiating. Burial followed in
the East Eatonton Cemetery.
“Mrs. Birdie” as she was
often called, was a native
of Washington County, and a lifelong resident of Putnam
County. She was born Aug. 9,1938, an identical twin and the
12th child born to the late Joe and Pearl Hood. At the age
of 11, she was baptized and joined El Bethel Baptist Church
in Milledgeville, and became an active servant leader. After
attending Baldwin County public schools, Berdice gradu
ated from Grady Hospital School of Nursing as a Licensed
Practical Nurse and worked for more than three decades
in Putnam and Baldwin Counties. “The most I loved about
my profession was getting the lil’ babies up every morning,”
she reflected. Later she joined Saint Paul Baptist Church,
Milledgeville, where she served as an usher, missionary and
mother of the church.
On July 17, I960, Berdice married her one, true love,
Cleveland Hurt, Sr. To this union five children were born,
one that preceded her in death, a baby boy, Shelby Terrell
Hurt. She loved serving others through her wonderful
cooking, especially her buttermilk pies; entrepreneurship;
civic involvement through clubs and organizations, includ
ing Order of the Eastern Star; empathetic conversations;
warm embraces; encouraging words and warm smile every
time she graced you with her presence.
Cherishing her memories is her husband of 57 years,
Cleveland Hurt Sr., her three sons,
Reginald Hurt. Cleveland Hurt Jr. and Jason Hurt, one
daughter Monique Hurt
William, a host of grandchildren, one sister Ruby Hood
Hill (Tigner Hill, Jr.), of Milledgeville, extended family
members, Douglas Hurt and Tammy Johnson and devoted,
life-long friend and confidante, Eva Julia Williams, a host
of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Pete O’Neal “Neal” Dolvin, Jr.
July 24,1943-Dec. 2,2015
Pete O’Neal “Neal” Dolvin, Jr., of Union
Point, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 2,
2015 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens.
Born on July 24, 1943 in Siloam, Neal
was the younger of two children born
to the late Pete O’Neal Dolvin, Sr. and
Lucille Acree Dolvin. He graduated from
Greensboro High School, where he was
an outstanding basketball player. He
attended the University of Georgia and
played in the Dixie Red Coat Band. He
then moved to Atlanta where he managed
Films Incorporated. In 1972 he married
Robbie Riley of Tennessee. Upon return
ing to Union Point he became manager
for Lawrence and Willis Oil Company. He retired after
34 years of service. Neal influenced the lives of many
friends and families with his musical talent of singing
and playing the piano and his love of sports, especially
NGA Patriots, Greene County Tigers, Georgia Bulldogs
and the Atlanta Falcons.
Neal was very community minded and was a member
of the Union Point Lion’s Club, choir director for First
United Methodist Church of Greensboro and the First
Presbyterian Church of Union Point. He also sang in the
Anchored Five Quartet. He
awarded scholarships from
the Robbie Dolvin Scholar
ship Fund and headed the
Star Student Program for
NGA and Greene County

High School. He was an avid sports fan
and held season tickets to the University of
Georgia football, basketball and baseball
games. He also had season tickets to
the Atlanta Falcons. He enjoyed taking
family and friends to the various sporting
events. For many years he headed the
American Heart Fund in Greene County
and was a member of the Greene County
Booster Club. He was a charter member
of Reynolds Plantation Golf Club.
He was preceded in death by his much
loved wife, Robbie Riley Dolvin on April
3, 2005. Survivors include his only sister,
Kay Dolvin Lord (Lee), of Greensboro; his
beloved nieces and nephew, Paige Peugh, Til Peugh and
Jimmy Peugh (Denise); great nephews and nieces, Pete
and J. B. Peugh and Peyton and Parker Peugh; his good
friend David Stephens; and many cousins, other relatives
and numerous friends.
Visitation was held on Saturday, Dec. 5 at the home of
Kay and Lee Lord, 3540 Hwy. 15 S., Greensboro, which
was Neal’s birthplace. Graveside services were held
on Dec. 6, 2015 at Siloam Cemetery with Rev. Richard
Chewning officiating. The family requests that any me
morials be made to the Siloam United Methodist Church,
