This is one of my favorites. I’ll share it again this year. Lillian Smith was a writer and civil rights activist in the early 1900s. In her lovely story “Memory of a Large Christmas” she writes of the true meaning of Christmas - as a time of giving. She and her eight siblings learned at an early age how to live in a community. As World War I loomed, and as her father’s business suffered, Ms. Smith recalls a particularly austere Christ mas. They even discussed the possibility of skipping Christmas altogether. Yes, that seemed to be the best course of action - skip Christmas. However, in the midst of economic and spir itual depression, one of the children said, “We had for got our father. In that year of austerity, he invited the Jem Choomack PASTOR, FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH GREENSBORO chain gang to have Christ mas dinner with us.” That year, Lillian’s father invited 48 convicted felons and their guards to Christ mas dinner. Apparently, he had been to visit them and found their living situation quite unacceptable. He thought that a good meal and Christian fellow ship would be just what these men needed. So, as the men came up the drive way, Mother put out the best China, greeted every man personally, and literally put on the table everything in the house. Before dinner, Father read the Christmas story while two armed guards leaned against the trees. Eight of the men were lifers; 10 were killers, two were bank robbers, three had sto len cars, one burned down his neighbor’s house and one had raped a girl - every man listened attentively to the ancient words. After the reading, Father said he hoped that every thing was well with their families back home - and then he invited everyone to “eat plenty and have a good time.” He said, ‘We’re proud to have you today. We would’ve been a little lonely if you hadn’t come.” As we celebrate Christ mas Day, there are two lessons in this story: First, giving is always better than receiving; and second, you are never too poor to give. GREENE COUNTY GCHS JROTC cadets attend Veterans Day events Veterans Day was a busy day for Greene County High School's JROTC Cadet Corps. The Tiger Group, under the Command of cadet/Lt Colonel Darrell Evans, posted the Colors and raised the flag at Del Webb retirement community and attended a special ceremony honoring veterans at Savannah Court before culminating with a Retreat Ceremony at the high school, or home base. In the traditional military, retreat signifies the end of the duty day and formal respect is paid to "Ole Glory." Presiding over the ceremony, from left, was c/Lt Colonel Darrell Evans, GA-939's Deputy Group Commander, c/Major Shaquita Jackson and the unit's Command Chief Master Sergeant, c/CMSgt lllse Ortega.
