Athens Regional Auxiliary wins award
for Community Conscience Outreach
The Athens Regional
Auxiliary was awarded
the 2015 Community Con
science Outreach Award for
Large Hospitals. The award
was presented at the annual
meeting of the Georgia Hos
pital Association’s Council
on Auxiliaries/Volunteers.
The Athens Regional
Auxiliary was recognized
for its fundraising efforts
which benefitted Athens
Regional’s Neonatal and
Intensive Care Unit. The
Auxiliary, through special
sales and proceeds from the
Pink Posey, ARMC’s gift
shop, raised over $340,000.
The Auxiliary’s hard work
and dedication purchased
three giraffe beds in addi
tion to furnishing the family
waiting area in the NICU.
Giraffe beds are incuba
tors and radiant warmers
in one. They eliminate the
stress of moving critically-ill
infants from bed to bed. The
family waiting area provides
a “homelike” atmosphere as
parents and family mem
bers wait to visit or care for
their premature and at-risk
babies.
The Athens Regional
Auxiliary celebrated its 50th
anniversary in 2015. Since
the start of the program,
members have donated
more than $3.1 million to
the Athens Regional Foun
dation to support hospital
projects and contributed
more than 556,000 hours of
their time.

Along the Paper Route
Characters in small thriving
communities like Watkinsville
flourish.
Such is the case with Peggy
Holcomb, The Retiring Tourism
Director of Oconee County - who is
anything but a retiring individual.
The unofficial mayor of
downtown Watkinsville wears/
has worn many hats: store
owner, OCAF director, mother
and grandmother... preeminent
volunteer recruiter.
Includung a volunteer stint
manning the only non-motorized
Christmas float in downtown
Watkinsville. Peggy’s recruiting
skills roped me into pushing the
float for over 90 minutes, along
with Mayor Luken and Holcomb’s
Husband Lee.
Punchline; three kids remarked,
“Look at those 3 old men pushing
the float!”
Remembered by many, never
forgotten, that’s Peggy.
