T his year the
Morgan
County
branch
of the NAACP
celebrated Dr.
Martin Luther King
Jr. Day with two
events - a breakfast
program and a
religious program.
The day kicked off bright
and early at the Source of
Light Ministry building on
Highway 441 in Madison.
Guests were treated to
breakfast and fellowship
before the program began.
NAACP member Mr.
Bennie V. Williams served
as the Master of Ceremo
nies for the program. Dr.
Bill Shade, Source of Light
Ministries Former Director,
welcomed those in atten
dance to the event.
Williams then led the
group in a congregation
al song, “Lift Every Voice
and Sing.” Morgan County
Youth Council and NAACP
Member Mr. Terry Lemon,
Jr. brought greetings from
national, state, regional and
local leaders of the NAACP.
Mayor Fred Perriman spoke
briefly as well.
“The city of Madison
always looks forward to this
presentation each year that
the NAACP puts it on, we
look forward to breakfast
that they serve us to let us
know that they are a big
part of this great communi
ty,” said Perriman.
“As we look at Dr. King,
as we celebrate his legacy
of what he has done we can
look around here at our own
city to see what strives have
been made, contributions
have been done, and how
we stand as a city and I truly
say that Madison stands
on the mount of promise
across the nation, across the
country across the world.”
The Mayor went on to
point to having an African
American Chairman of the
County Commissioners, he
spoke about the great school
system and how Dr. King’s
legacy is still living on in the
Madison area.
Morgan County Board of
Commissioners Chairman
Donald Harris then ad
dressed the room. Mr.
Kendrick Simmons,
Morgan County NAACP
First Vice President, ac
knowledged the various
elected officials and school
principals. Reverend Bobby
Patman led the prayer and
Mrs. Laura W. Butler First
Lady Emeritus, Georgia
State Conference Morgan
County Branch President
introduced the speaker,
Morgan County Com
missioner Ellen Warren,
and then pointed out the
NAACP members that were
present.
Warren’s speech began by
acknowledging that Harris
was chosen as Chairman of
the commissioners making
him the first African
American to hold that role
in the county.
Warren made note of
how that fact went almost
unnoticed other than the
fact that he was chosen,
but said that maybe we are
becoming more color blind
and looking more at char
acter than their skin color.
However, she continued by
saying that maybe we are
putting prejudice on other
groups of people.
Tolerance, diversity, ac
ceptance are nice words that
are hard to put into practice
but they are the ideals that
brought many nationalities
to this country who have
brought this nation to be
the most enviable on Earth
to deny them is to deny the
principals on which this
country was founded,” said
Warren.
She continued by pointing
to the good things that have
happened in the county and
the things that the country
is struggling with. She en
couraged people to volun
teer, participate and mostly
to vote.
She then asked that
they teach their children
compassion, goodwill and
optimism saying that the
American dream is not
dead. Warren asked that
they acknowledge the other
Civil Rights leaders and to
remember what they went
through. Shelia Tolbert,
Morgan County NAACP,
gave announcements and
Bobby Patman gave the
benediction.
On Monday evening, the
Morgan County branch of
the NAACP hosted a second
event, a religious program
at Thankful Baptist Church.
Rev. Aaron Carter was
the Master of Ceremony
for the evening event. The
Thankful Baptist Choir,
Mrs. Veverly Biggs and Mrs.
Sylvia Wilson provided the
music for the evening.
A welcome was given by
Deacon Pledger Browning,
Rev. Bobby Patman read
the scripture, Rev. Angela
Simmons said the prayer,
Mr. Glenn Tolbert, Jr.
brought greetings, and
Mayor Fred Perriman
spoke and Laura W. Butler
recognized the guests.
Deacon Kendrick Simmons
gave an offertory prayer,
Deacon James Edwards
gave a membership appeal
and Rev. Patman gave the
benediction. The service
featured speaker Pastor L.
T. Crawford, President of
the Greene County Branch
of the NAACP. Crawford
spoke out of Exodus 23,
where he talked about de
liverance.
