BOE, LOA reach charter consensus Jackie Gutknecht jackie@lakeoconeenews.us Through snow and ice, the Lake Oconee Academy Governance Board and Greene County Board of Education met at Rock Eagle Saturday for a joint board retreat with the goal of getting a consen sus on questions raised on the LOA charter renewal application. The meeting focused on ques tions around funding, enrollment, charter length and pre-school ma triculation. The boards reached an agree ment to use the state-provided funding model. Jackie Gutknecht/Staff Greene County Sheriff Donnie Harrison was sworn into office Jan. 21 by Probate Judge LaVern Ogletree at the Greene County Courthouse. Harrison was named interim sheriff after former Sheriff Chris Houston resigned from his position to accept the interim superintendent position with the Greene County School System. "I do understand that I was not elected," Harrison said. "I am merely filling in." Sheriff special election set for May 24 Jackie Gutknecht Jackie@lakeoconeenews.us A special election for the Greene County Sheriff seat will take place May 24 - the same day as the county primary - Greene County Elections Supervisor Mike Malone said. “The first thing I need to tell you is that state law trumps county law,” he said. “The county code said they must hold election within 60 days. It’s impossible; we can’t do it. According to sheriffs office reports, the suspect, Prince William Dennis, 21, of Augusta, entered the store, on Seven Islands Road near SEE ROBBERY » A5 Dennis MORGAN COUNTY Sedan rolls into Morgan Stanley Jeff Warren jeff@lakeoconeenews.us A mid-size, green Mercury sedan crossed a curb and sidewalk Friday, Jan. 22, at the south edge of West Jefferson Street in downtown Madison and crashed head first through plate glass of the Morgan Stanley office at address 124. The accident happened near 8:30 a.m. in drizzling rain. Madison Police and firefighters responded.
