Poultry proposal pondered in public hearing
Mark Engel

“Let’s pray about this thing.”
That was the last suggestion
offered Monday night at a public
hearing on major changes impacting
chicken growers in Greene County.
It came from Bobby Gresham
whose church, New Bethel Baptist
on Leslie Mill Road, is literally in
the center of a storm created by
the county’s approval of 16 chicken
houses, each more than 30,000
square feet, on recently purchased
property along Veazy Road.
Uproar from the Veazy commu
nity led to a moratorium on permits
for chicken houses last year. Com

Woman kidnapped by Waffle House cook
PUTNAM COUNTY
Mayor: Alice Walker Day
to be proclaimed Feb. 9
Jackie Gutknecht
jackie@lakeoconeenews.us
A woman was caught off guard
after accepting a ride to the Flying
J from a local Waffle House cook
Jan. 22 when she ended up with
a gun pointed in her direction at
a trailer she had never been to
before.
Allen Peart, the cook, offered
Patricia Ann Turner a ride after
she had gotten into a wreck on
the interstate around 4 a.m. and
the responding deputy dropped
her off at the Waffle House on
South Main Street.
“Turner stated that while she
was there she ate and asked one
of the waitresses if there were
any taxi companies or rental car
companies in the area,” according
to the Greene County Sheriffs
Office incident report. “Turner
stated that was when the cook
told her that he could help her
out.”
Turner described the cook as a

Tuesday, Feb. 9 at noon, the
Georgia Writers Museum will
host a community celebration as
Mayor Walter Rocker declares it
Alice Walker day. All in the com
munity are welcomed to join to
the celebration as we recognize
the great achievements of the
Pulitzer Prize winning author,
poet and activist.
While I certainly recognize
that this declaration pales in
comparison to the Pulitzer Prize,
I hope that we as a community
look at this event as placing a
stake in the ground to celebrate
the life of this national gem. No
matter what you think of Walker’s
work and activism you have to be
honest that her accomplishments
are profound and worth taking a
step back and looking at with a
