GREENE COUNTY Poultry proposal pondered in public hearing Mark Engel news@lakeoconeenews.us “Let’s pray about this thing.” That was the last suggestion offered Monday night at a public hearing on major changes impacting chicken growers in Greene County. It came from Bobby Gresham whose church, New Bethel Baptist on Leslie Mill Road, is literally in the center of a storm created by the county’s approval of 16 chicken houses, each more than 30,000 square feet, on recently purchased property along Veazy Road. Morgan Memorial wins award for quality care, patient safety Jeff Warren jeff@lakeoconeenews.us In competition with 45 critical access hospitals, Morgan Memorial Hospital has tied for first place as winner of a quality care and patient safety award for 2015- 2016. Kimberly Miller announced the award during a meeting of the Morgan County Hospital Authori ty Thursday, Jan. 28. Miller directs the department of quality assur ance and process improvement for the hospital. Harrison Jr. GREENE COUNTY Woman kidnapped by Waffle House cook PUTNAM COUNTY Mayor: Alice Walker Day to be proclaimed Feb. 9 Jackie Gutknecht jackie@lakeoconeenews.us A woman was caught off guard after accepting a ride to the Flying J from a local Waffle House cook Jan. 22 when she ended up with a gun pointed in her direction at a trailer she had never been to before. Allen Peart, the cook, offered Patricia Ann Turner a ride after she had gotten into a wreck on the interstate around 4 a.m. and the responding deputy dropped her off at the Waffle House on South Main Street. “Turner stated that while she was there she ate and asked one of the waitresses if there were any taxi companies or rental car companies in the area,” according to the Greene County Sheriffs Office incident report. “Turner stated that was when the cook told her that he could help her out.” Turner described the cook as a SEE KIDNAP » A8 Tuesday, Feb. 9 at noon, the Georgia Writers Museum will host a community celebration as Mayor Walter Rocker declares it Alice Walker day. All in the com munity are welcomed to join to the celebration as we recognize the great achievements of the Pulitzer Prize winning author, poet and activist. While I certainly recognize that this declaration pales in comparison to the Pulitzer Prize, I hope that we as a community look at this event as placing a stake in the ground to celebrate the life of this national gem.
