The case has received widespread attention from Atlanta media outlets, which describe the Mclvers as “an Atlanta power couple.” According to pub lished accounts, Mclver has said he shot his wife by accident. He said he was seated in the back seat of the couple’s SUV when some people began milling about the vehicle as a friend drove it through Atlanta with his wife in the front passenger seat. He removed a gun from a console in the SUV and later fell asleep with it in his hands as the SUV drove on through Atlanta. He was later suddenly awakened and the gun went off. “It was a horrible accident,” Putnam Develop ment Authority Chairman Bill Sharp said in a tele phone interview with The Messenger. “I’m not a judge or jury but I know Tex well. I have no reason to believe he is anything other than innocent.” He said it was helping Mclver to continue to attend PDA meetings. “It helps keep his mind off things,” Sharp said. Mclver has attended and participated in the two regular monthly meetings of the PDA that have occurred following the shooting — one on Oct. 10 and another on Nov. 14. Sharp said it was up to the Putnam County Board of Commissioners whether Mclver should continue to serve on the PDA and that no commissioners had said anything to him about removing Mclver while the investigation continues. “As far as I’m concerned, neither the county commis sioners nor the Putnam De velopment Authority have any intention of removing him from the board,” Putnam Commission Chairman Steve Hersey said in a telephone inter view. “My understanding is, yes it’s a homicide, which means death at the hands of another person. The manner of death could be determined to be acciden tal. As far as staying on the PDA, if he wishes to resign that would be his decision.” When asked if he thought if Mclver’s presence on the PDA could generate contro versy and hamper Putnam’s economic development efforts, Hersey said, “Abso lutely not. He contributed considerably to bringing Legacy (Homes) here. As an attorney he was very helpful in guiding them through the rules and regulations in Putnam County.” A Fulton County Medical Examiner office’s autopsy report for Landa Diane Mclver was obtained by The Messenger last week. It calls her death a homicide, which doesn’t imply a judgment on the legality of the action. It also says, “The firing of a gun requires several in tentional actions.” It refers to the gun as “an alleged revolver style pistol.” It lists as cause of death “gunshot wound of back” and suggests the bullet did not travel through anything before entering Diane Mclver’s back. It said the bullet traveled right to left, back to front and downward. In addition to his Atlanta home, Tex Mclver has a second home — a Putnam County ranch. There is ap parently no requirement for members of the Putnam Development Authority to be full-time Putnam resi dents. However, the Putnam County Code of Ordinances says, “Each member of the board of directors shall be a taxpayer of the county.” ROTARY UPER FLE ROTARY Club of Greene and Putnam Counties Rotary Club is Happy to Announce the November 17 th Winner November 10 th Winner Katie Howell otr fi' Bull A #452 a $300 Shopping Spree at Genuine Georgia donated by Genuine Georgia in Downtown Greensboro ^November 24 th Prized a $300 Gift Certificate from aimu a 5300 Cjitt certificate from Lightsof Oconee Date: Item - Advertiser (Value): Date: Item - Advertiser (Value): Date: Item - Advertiser (Value): 7-Jan Fresh Flower Arrangement-of-the-Month for 12 months Z.
