T. Michael Stone
michael@lakeoconeenews.us
Deputies with the Greene
County Sheriffs Office interrupt
ed a pair of crooks trying to cash
fraudulent checks at the Bank
South on Lake Oconee Parkway
last week.
Deputy Michael Griffin arrived
on scene and was alerted to the
two suspects who were still at the
teller window.
Deputy Griffin approached the
two suspects and placed his hand
on one’s shoulder to get his atten
tion. When he did, the suspect,
identified as Joshua Lewis Samuel,
fled on foot toward the exit but was
physically restrained by Deputy
Griffin. Samuel proceeded to
push and attempt to kick Deputy
Griffin until he was able to escape
the bank while Deputy Griffin
radioed for assistance.
During his escape from the
bank, Samuel caused an estimated
$5,000 in damage to an exterior
glass door.
Turns out Samuel had tried to
cash the same check at the BB&T
bank located at 201 South Main

day. Witnesses said Samuel came

Rain improves Lake Oconee levels
Mark Engel
engel@lakeoconeenews.us
If you were floating on Lake
Oconee Wednesday morning,
you would have beenat 433.67
feet above sea level. Georgia
Power considers the lake to be
at “full pool” when the surface is
435 feet above sea level.
Despite the heavy and steady
rain over the last two weekends,
Lake Oconee is still down by
more than a foot and half.
The last time it was at 435 feet
was July 19- Then the drought
hit and the levels dropped dra
matically.
It was close to full pool at
434.96 on Sept.20 but it plum
meted again. On Nov. 19, the

The Georgia Environmental Protec

of water contaminant levels in tests
of the water system serving Reynolds

Residents first heard the news in a
letter this week from Piedmont Water
President Adam Shaifer.
Shaifer says the violations were
limited to “three of 21 wells” in the
Reynolds system.

Museum hosting Kilmer
exhibit through February
Last Thursday evening, the
Steffan Thomas Museum of Art in
Buckhead hosted the opening recep
tion of its newest exhibit, “Garden
with Venus and other paintings by
Nicholas Kilmer,” which will remain
on display until Feb. 25.
The exhibit consists solely of
paintings by Kilmer, a contempo
rary impressionist painter based in
Cambridge, Massachusetts. Kilmer
himself was present at the show,
and local art collectors and guest
curators of this collection, Andy and
Hathia Hayes, introduced Kilmer
before his gallery talk. Andy ex
plained to the crowded gallery that
they brought his work to Buckhead
to combat the notion that all artists
are dead, and they brought Kilmer
himself “to make you understand
that Nick is not a dead artist.”
