Chamber names new president
The Greene County Chamber
of Commerce has announced
the promotion of Bradley Lupton
as its new president. Lupton
succeeds Leah Dukes, who left
the Chamber in November to
pursue other interests.
Lupton’s first day at the
Chamber was on Aug. 4 as the
membership and event coordi
nator. As president, he will be
responsible for overseeing the
day-to-day operations of the
Chamber as well as working with
Chamber staff to ensure current
programs and services meet the
needs of its membership.
“It is such an honor to be chosen
as the new president,” said
Lupton. “I am thrilled to have

Union Point,
Greene County
go to court
Mark Engel

An 18-month fight between
Greene County and the City
of Union Point finally went to
court last week.
Greene County wants Union
Point to pay $40,000 per year
for use of the county 9-1-1
dispatch and communications
services.
Greensboro has been paying
$60,000 for the service for
years but Union Point was not
being charged anything until
the county commission changed
that in June 2015.
Union Point says its residents
already pay for the services
through county property taxes
and the $1.50 per month 9-1-1

Councilwoman clarifies votes on historic districts
T. Michael Stone
Michael@lakeoconeenews.us
Just when the residents of Mad
ison’s Historic District thought
they had eliminated the specter
of planned residential zoning for
good when the city council voted
to ban them on Dec. 12, a special
called meeting which included
a “Discussion of PRD’s in the
historic” in its agenda, the specter
rose once again.
But it turns out the verbiage on
the city’s agenda wasn’t exactly on
the mark.
City council woman Chris
Hodges asked for the meeting so
she could apologize for voting in
error at the previous meeting.
The protracted meeting held
on Dec. 12 was the culmination
of several months of debate that
involved the city’s Historic Pres
ervation Commission (HPC),
Planning and Zoning Board,
Madison City Council and dozens
of residents of the historic district
who were adamant that a planned
residential district should not be
allowed within its boundaries.
After three hours of debate and
discussion during that meeting.
Hodges voted in favor of a two-tier
zoning process which would have
required developers to obtain a
certificate of appropriateness from
the HPC for a site plan before
