The Democrats have shown an innate ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Both Houses of Congress have Republican majorities. The number of Republican governors has risen to 33, the most in nearly a century and the GOP controls both chambers in 32 state legis latures, including Georgia. The Democrats’ reaction? Take a hard left at the next political intersection. One CNN commentator, a former press secretary to out- of-touch-with-reali- ty presidential candidate Bernie Sanders declared, “We don’t need white people leading the Demo cratic Party right now.” A lot of news reports declare that the leading candidate to head up the National Democratic Party is Minnesota Con gressman Keith Ellison, a black Muslim with past ties to Louis Farrakhan’s Nation of Islam and who sits so far out on the far-left fringe of the party that he makes Bernie Sanders look like Gomer Pyle. My own sources tell me that Ellison has emerged as the consensus choice because Democrats have been unable to identify an atheist transvestite who Rich Continued from A4 We shut down our phones and email. It was glorious. “I could get used to this,” Tink said. “I AM used to it,” I replied. “Let’s move to the far reaches of the moun tains and go off grid for good.” I wasn’t kidding. Over the years, I have determined that 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. are my prime writing hours. If I don’t write then, I generally won’t write a’tall. I decided years ago to avoid the problem of the problems that come when I get out of bed that I just wouldn’t get out of bed until I had written. I sit in bed, have coffee and write. It usually works like a charm. So much so that Tink has picked up this habit. A few months ago, he sat in bed for over a week, working on a television pilot. He pretty much only left the bed to wash his hands and eat. We went to a gospel Morin Continued from A5 dumping of the costs of current policy onto the future. There is so much concern over how our actions today affect the climate for future gener ations but ironically no entered the country ille gally. Good help is hard to find these days. I’m not sure what the Democrats are smoking (I have a good idea), but going as far left as they seem to be headed is not going to bring main stream Americans into the fold. Their decision should serve as a cautionary tale for Republicans, who run the risk of going too far to the right and being per ceived as just a bunch of angry white guys. If they do, we’ll boot them out just like we did the Democrats. Most of us are stationed somewhere in the middle of the political spectrum and we don’t like extrem ists on either side. Both parties seem unable to grasp this simple fact of political life because they are too busy kowtowing to the extremists. OK, enough of this stuff. The inch-wide and inch- deep political pundits and blah-blah bloggers can take it from here. A few days ago, I wrote a column then started to get out of bed. “Nope,” I muttered. “I’m staying put and writing more.” Minutes later, the phone rang. It was an aggravation that called for me to get out of bed, get dressed and go fix it. Some days this plan works better than others. And sometimes, it brings on a sore throat.
