The tournament has been staged on a municipal course since 1968, when Torrey Pines began as the tournament site. No other golf purse has grown as much in the last 40 years, a testament to the work of the organizing Century Club and the backing of its sponsors. Tiger Woods has won at this course a record eight times in his career. Woods will return to Torrey Pines this week for his first PGA Tour start in 19 months. r 9 Tournament Results 1. Golfing News China has launched a renewed crackdown on golf, closing 111 courses. China banned the development of new golf courses in 2004, when it had fewer than 200. Since that time, the number of courses has more than tripled. Developers build courses under the guise of parks or other projects, often with the tacit approval of local officials. In one example chronicled by state media, an illegal golf course boasting 58 villas was originally built as a “public sports park,” only to be secretly converted later. The ruling Communist Party warned its 88 million members in 2015 not to play golf, likening it to “extravagant eating and drinking” and other bad habits. Your grip should be in the . fingers of both hands, not the palms. Most of the grip pressure should be felt in the last J three fingers of your left hand. There is much less pressure in the right hand. There should be no pressure at all in the thumb and forefinger of the right hand. Keep your FedEx Cup Standings continued- overall grip pressure light. Don’t “squeeze the toothpaste out of the tube.” Make sure {#' 43^^ your grip is strong enough, with both Vs pointing over your right shoulder. A stong left hand grip produces solid shots. Keep hands dose together. For low ball flight, keep grip pressure firm throughout swing. To promote a fade, keep left grip firm and right grip light. When putting, keep palms facing each other. For better accuracy when putting, make both V’s in your grip point to your chin. Justin Hubbard/Staff Anton Kilpatrick drains a free throw. Justin Hubbard/Staff Desmond Dunn looks upward after being knocked hard to the ground. Tigers Continued from Cl row. He said they were too complacent. “I think winning those games in the fashion that we won, they got too high and they don’t know how to come down,” McNease said. “It’s disappointing that we were playing so well and then, out of nowhere, it looks as if they just don’t want to play because they feel like they’ve accom plished something. It’s a learning experience, and a lot of things will be different down the line as far as the team is concerned, because they’re not the team that I thought that they were.” Greene played arguably its worst quarter of the season to open Saturday’s contest against the Scream ing Devils. The score stood at 4-2 about a minute into the first quarter, then Warren’s defense smoth ered the Tigers. By the end of the first quarter, the Scream ing Devils led 24-13 and McNease could be seen sitting with his head in his hand. The Tigers fought back in the second quarter, thanks in large part to a string of shots made by Devin Wynn that helped Greene go on a 10-0 scoring run about halfway through the period. Danahj Wright provided a boost off the bench, too. Greene trailed by seven at halftime. Through out most of the third and fourth quarter, the Tigers challenged the Screaming Devils and appeared on the brink of a come-from-be- hind victory. However, in the waning minutes, the Tigers com mitted fouls and turn overs that allowed Warren chances to pull ahead. The Screaming Devils came through in the clutch, but the Tigers did not. The loss came on the heels of losses to GMC (54-48) last Tuesday and Hancock (53-50) last Friday. While discussing the Tigers’ in ability to perform well in the fourth quarter against Warren, McNease criticized their overall play the entire week. “They didn’t play with heart, they didn’t play like they wanted to win,” McNease said. “They played like they’re just out here in a rec game and ‘Let’s just have fun.’ They didn’t play like I know to play. They did not represent Greene County High School basket ball [Saturday] or Tuesday night. Friday night, they did in spurts. But [Saturday] they were not a represen tation of who we were and who we can be.” McNease said he hated “to talk down on them like that,” but he had to be honest when assessing their performances. He also said he’d make an effort to change up his approach to the team’s games. There could be changes coming on the team, too. The Tigers played Wash- ington-Wilkes this past Tuesday and will then face Lincoln County, Glascock County, Lake Oconee Academy and Taliaferro County to close out the regular season. McNease said there could be some more unfamiliar faces on the floor during those games. “There’s a lot of selfishness in the locker room,” he said. “There’s a lot of ‘me’s’ in the locker room and there’s not a lot of ‘we’s.’ We’re slowly separating at the seams. And that’s fine because, when the pressure’s on, I step up and I figure out things, and whoever’s on the train at the end of the day, they’re on the train. And I’ll know. The ones that want to play and want to play like I want them to play, we’ll play, and we’ll just ride out the season like that. Because it’s unfair to those that are playing hard and it’s really selfish for those who don’t want to play and not give it everything they’ve got.” STEFFEN THOMAS MUSEUM SHOP Tuesday - Saturday 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM 8te,{j(je,n Thomas Ori^inads and Prints Currently featuring a wide selection of pottery from North Carolina Potters, Interchangable Snap Jewelry and much more!
