Friday, January 27, 2017 Lake Oconee News Page C5 MORGAN COUNTY Morgan wrestling loses heartbreaker to North Forsyth The Morgan County varsity wres tling team traveled to North Forsyth last Saturday to finish the regular season schedule with a quad meet against South Cobb, Athens Christian and North Forsyth. In the first dual, the Bulldogs defeated South Cobb 74-6 via individual wins by Tyler Snowden (106 pounds), Mason Adams (113 pounds), Clayton Howell (120 pounds), Kevin Berisko (132 pounds), Zach Smith (138 pounds), Jody McAlister (145 pounds), Antonio Robinson (152 pounds), Donovan McEUigott (160 pounds), Sean McElligott (170 pounds), Finn Williams (182 pounds), Ladarrius Andrews (195 pounds), Michael Rhodes (220 pounds) and Robert Gibbs (heavyweight). Morgan won its second dual, too, which was against Athens Christian. The Bulldogs’ winners included Snowden, Berisko, McAlister, Robinson, Donovan McElligott, Sean McElligott, Williams, Andrews, Rhodes and Gibbs in their same respective weight classes. The Bulldogs tied with North Forsyth at 36 in the final dual of the day. Each team won seven of its 14 matches, so the winner had to be determined by other criteria. The fifth possible tiebreaker, the team with the most six-point victories such as falls, dis qualifications, forfeits, etc., decided that North Forsyth was the winner. Snowden, Adams, Howell, McAlister, Robinson, Rhodes and Gibbs all earned in dividual victories during the dual against North Forsyth. “Unfortunately we let another big match slip through our fingers versus North Forsyth,” said Morgan coach John Robbins. “The bouts we lost at 138, 160, 170 and 195 (pounds) were all matches I felt like we should have won.” “On another note, it’s hard for me not to get sentimental at this point in the season, as seniors Jody McAlister, Antonio Robinson, Sean McElligott, Ladarrius Andrews, Michael Rhodes and Robert Gibbs all wrestled their last high school dual Saturday. All six of these men will be four-year lettermen for us at the conclu sion of this season, and they are all wres tling particularly well as we head into the home stretch of the state finals series. I’m really looking forward to watching them climb to the top of the mountain over these next few weeks.” The Bulldogs travel to Fannin County this Friday and Saturday for the 4-AAA Traditional Championships, which will be held against the other 12 4-AAA teams. The top four finishers in each weight class will then advance to the AAA Eastern State Sectionals. Morgan will host the sec tionals Feb. 4. The top four wrestlers at sectionals will advance to compete at the Macon Centre- plex in the Class AAA state finals, sched uled for Feb. 10-11. Gators Continued from C4 in favor of the Cavaliers. Needing an urgent response in the second half, the Gators found life in the third quarter. Offensively, the Gators were on fire, scoring 22 points; defen sively, the Gators were just as effective, holding the Cavs to 8 points. Entering the fourth quarter, the Gators had claimed a 41-40 lead. Gatewood would implode in the final eight minutes, however, ren dering 20 points to its opponents while scoring 9. The final score, 60-50, had rendered the Gators their third region loss. Despite suffering a heartbreaking loss, the Gators showcased some excellent performances. Junior Cole Williams and Senior Matthew Weeks combined for 23 points, followed by Luke Haley and Jake Turner (who scored 8 points apiece). Williams was also effective passing the basketball, tallying four assists. Turner lead the Gators in rebounds, racking up 12 for the contest.
