Friday, Jan. 20-Sunday, April 9 The Madison-Morgan Cultural Center is hosting a traveling exhibit, on loan from the Museum of the Cherokee Indian, that presents the story of Lt. Henry Timberlake and Cherokee leader Ostenaco as they journeyed to each other's countries in 1762, as Emissaries of Peace. The contrast between their cultures is shown in this exhibit. The exhibit is based on Timberlake's Memoirs, along with period artwork, artifacts from archeology and historical collections, and other 18th century accounts. The center is also hosting a gallery show of traditional carved wooden masks, all of which are available for purchase. Sunday, Feb.5-Friday, Feb. 24 The Morgan County African American Museum is hosting an exhibition in honor of Black History Month. "In Plain View: A Remembering" is celebrating black women of the 19th Century who were landowners and businesswomen, reported to be the first black female landowners in Morgan County. They lived and thrived in the small hamlet of Plainview here in Morgan County. The museum is open from Tuesday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students, and $2.50 for seniors. The story revolves around four unique southern women brought together during an impromptu happy hour: a workaholic with no life, a recent widow, another dumped by her husband and a life coach offering to help them get their lives back on track. Over a six-month period, these middle-aged women (with occasional liquid refreshment) successfully bond and find the confidence to jump-start their lives. The show will be open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday 2 to 4 p.m. The show is free and open to the public and will take place in the reception hall and gallery. More than 100 photogra phers have entered and submitted more than 350 photos in this eighth annual juried show. The event is sponsored by the Eatonton-Putnam Arts Foundation. A reception for all photographers and their families will be held Feb. 17 at 5 p.m., and winners of the various categories will be announced at that time. The show features photographs by amateurs, juniors (under 18) and advanced photographers. Entries include artists from all over Georgia. The profit from the show helps support PutnamARTS, the arm of the Founda tion that organizes classes, camps and art shows for adults and children throughout the year.
