Toni Henson Slade Courage to face pour fears, pour <demons? ’ Courage as defined by the Merriam-Webster dic tionary means the capacity to “venture, persevere and withstand danger, fear or difficulty.” Are you a person of courage? Everybody has some fears that are worthy of challenge. What kind might you have? Fears, some call them “demons,” come in a vari ety of situations. Many are not faced. Failure is the descriptor. Let me address a few of a psychological or spiritual nature that I reg ularly come across in my practice when people do not face their fears. 1. Failure of a spouse to protect a child from an abu sive spouse/parent. People stay in bad marriages when his or her spouse is physi cally, emotionally or sexu ally abusive to a child. 2. Failure of an adult child to confront a parent by saying what the parent did was wrong. This is not about blame; it is about telling your truth to the Dr. John Stathas Columnist one who parented inade quately. This communica tion helps the adult child “grow up” emotionally. 3. Failure of a person to assert his or her self to a spouse, parent, child, supervisor, etc... This person is a wimp. (I use this term often in therapy to motivate. It may be irreverent, but it usually enables the person to face the fear and move ahead.) 4. Failure of a person to establish a personal boundary to another. To be able to say that this or that behavior will no longer be tolerated or a certain con sequence will result. 5. Failure of a person to challenge oneself to be the best person s/he can be per sonally and professionally. Some people stay in a “safe” cocoon and do not venture out or stretch themselves into their potential. 6. Failure of a person to confront and conquer one’s personal weakness of the misuse of alcohol, tobacco, drugs, food, excess shop ping, pornography, steal ing, etc... 7. Failure of a person to confront his or her fears of darkness, airplanes, etc... 8. Failure to overcome the fear that you are going to hell because you broke your church’s made up rules. Examples of this might be for Catholics eating meat on Friday when it was forbidden or using birth control. Baptists may have SEE STATHAS » A9 Crossword Puzzle Across 1.
