Friday, February 17,2017 Lake Oconee News Page A5 Dear Friends, Did you know that under current law the federal gov ernment can access any of your emails that are over 180 days old without a warrant? Last week, the House took action to modernize our privacy laws by passing H.R. 387, the Email Privacy Act, which would estab lish a uniform standard for issuing warrants to obtain the contents of com munications in criminal and civil investigations. It would also clarify privacy rights for cloud comput ing services and maintain Congressional oversight au thority in closing a loophole commonly exploited by some federal agencies. This vital legislation updates our digital privacy laws to reflect the vast tech nological changes we’ve seen over the last 30 years while also ensuring that our law enforcement has the re sources it needs to protect public safety in the digital age. I was proud to vote for H.R. 387 to protect Fourth Amendment rights for all There was a movie in 1983 called Trading Places. The movie most famous characters were Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd. These two were the pigeon bait for the movie. They were to be used by two bil lionaire brothers as an ex periment for a $1 bet. This was the kicker: the rich white man was to be made into a poor man. Being poor was the ultimate hu miliation for the white guy. The begging black was to be made rich-wow! Now, let’s roll time back. How many of you have ever wanted to trade places with a poor black man born in the South in early the 1900s. America was still in a state of unrest and confusion about its negro people. It was the worst of times for struggling black folks across the country. The year 1912 Mr. Moseley entered from his mother’s womb. Being a black male child -I wonder did his mother ever have thoughts like Job had. Job cursed the very day that he was born, or did he secretly. Attempt to share the life of Mr. Tommy Mosley through Hice in the House Rep.Jody Hice U.S. Representative Americans. Also last week, the House continued its aggressive crusade to roll back regula tions issued by the Obama Administration. H.J. Res. 44 disapproves of a rule submitted by the Depart ment of Interior relating to the Bureau of Land Man agement’s 2.0 Rule, which undermines state and local authority over land man agement and planning deci sions. With the nullification of this overreaching regu lation, state and local gov ernments - not Washington bureaucrats and radical en vironment groups - will be empowered to best manage their public lands to ensure optimal use and good stew ardship. H.J. Res. 57 provides for Congressional disapproval of a rule containing multiple provisions which drastical ly expands the role of the federal government under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). This rule ignores the intent of ESSA and interferes with what should be a state or local issue, requiring states to provide evidence of curricu lum standards and bringing back federal test-based ac countability - something ESSA was supposed to halt. H.J. Res. 58 disapproves and nullifies the rule issued by the Department of Ed ucation that imposes new standards on teacher ed ucation and preparation and significantly expands the federal government’s involvement in the class room. Simply put, parents, teachers and school admin istrators are best suited to make the decisions about what is working and what Mosley\ 104 Bernice Dennis Guest Columnist the eyes of his daughter Sharon. My father was a ded icated loving and hard working man. He loved his family and his community. He was born in Hancock County, and the family moved to Greene County when he was a young teen. My father grew up and married a beautiful lady by the name of Annie Alex ander. From that union, six generations would follow. Questions: How did he describe his life as a child? My father was very quiet and shared only the good memories with us. He never burdened us with what his life was like as a child. I met my grandparents, and they did not discuss what their lives were like either, too painful I suppose. What about work? Dad held two jobs; he would get my brother all situated at farm while he was away. He and other men were picked and carried from the pickup location to work for the week. They were saw-mill ing. The driver would leave them, and they had these little huts to sleep in without heat. Sometimes it would be so cold that the trees would freeze, and the saw would not cut the trees. Regardless, the driver would not return for the pickup until Friday evening. Those were hard times, but for many it was the only means of survival. How did he contribute to the Community? He had great wisdom and knowledge that he shared with those who came around him. Pastors would come by just to listen to his words, and receive advice from him. He would speak out against any in justice. His opinions were expressed to all sometimes to those that were imposing unfair treatment. When the voting rights act was signed into law by Pres ident L.B. Johnson that was a great time despite having come at very high price-people lives. He took advantage of his right even in the end when things is not within our education system. In Fiscal Year 2016, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) reported a net loss of nearly $5.3 billion, marking a deficit for the 10th consec utive year. Last Monday, I questioned Postmaster General Megan Brennan in a House Oversight and Government Reform Com mittee hearing about the agency’s timeline for reform to reverse its massive losses. According to Brennan, delivery methods are a driving force behind the losses, and the USPS plans to begin testing new, eco-friendly vehicles within the next 18 months in order to address those issues. Abill introduced by House Oversight and Government Reform leaders, H.R. 756 , the Postal Service Reform Act of 2017, would make reforms to keep mailing costs affordable for con sumers, address unfunded liabilities of the USPS and encourage innovation, all without additional borrow ing from the U.S. taxpayer. seemed to be going back to the old days he fought to vote. Deceased 12-12 -2016, age 104. The more things change the more they remain the same. What changes did your father witness that have taken place in America? Very few things in his mind have changed. Black people are still in bondage only, now the restrictions are from a different set of laws that have been enacted. He would always say my people are still in slavery; they just don’t know it, but the one who was doing the enslavement knows. What was his peace and what disturbed him? His ultimate peace came from God. He did enjoy watching his children, and their siblings grow into fine young men and women. He also enjoyed the time SEE DENNIS » A6 Letters to the Editor Letters must be signed and include your full address and phone number for verification; only name and town are printed. STILL A FEW SEATS LEFT FOR THE SPAYGHETTI DINNER AT DaCORRADO'S NEXT MONDAY, FEB. 20th Reservations: orhsfund@gmail.com or by calling 706-454-1508 DeVos vote a proxy for freedom, choice The Democrats waged a bitter campaign against the confirmation of Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Ed ucation. Ultimately they lost that battle when Vice President Pence cast the deciding vote in a split Senate. But this battle had less to do with DeVos the woman (indeed, perhaps one can only be a mi sogynist if they oppose Democrat women) and more to do with the concept of “school choice.” Ah yes, the Democrats, the party of “choice” when it comes to women and their bodies are decidedly an ti-choice when the debate shifts to where you send your children to school. Because DeVos has ex pressed support for school vouchers, that means she is a blood-sucking monster who wants to see children die. This is no hy perbole in characterizing the oppositions rhetoric - noted Democrat film critic Richard Lawson tweeted “voucher programs will lead to more suicides, Betsy DeVos’s policies will kill children. That is not an exaggeration in any sense.” The tweet has since been deleted. But you get the idea. These people literally believe that if we don’t all meekly line up single file like cattle to go to our assigned schooling center, then the very fabric of society will be rent. Apparently allowing parents the freedom to decide where their children go to school means the public schools will be unable to function by virtue of decreased revenue. But this makes little sense on its face. If a school has 1,000 children and 500 leave for another school then both revenue and expenses have fallen in concert. This is why if you choose to eat at Mc Donalds and not Burger King no one says your actions are “defunding” Burger King - as though Burger King has some superior claim to your money that for the good of society necessitates you eat there. Why if you don’t eat at Burger King then they may have to fire people, and un employment is bad for society, therefore we will tell you when and where to eat, shop, live, and go to school. Even though schooling is the only active part of that hypothetical edict, logically there is no reason the argument this greater good argument can’t be used for any other Greg Morin Guest Columnist economic activity. School choice means that if money is directed away from public schools that are not satisfying the parent’s desire for a good education, then those public schools will have to fire teachers and (gasp!) administrators. Fewer public school teachers mean fewer public school union members. Unions oppose school voucher programs not because they genuinely think it will harm children. No. They oppose it because they genuinely think it will harm their current position of political clout. Fortunately the American public sees through the self-interest of the unions and past their spurious claims of wanting what is best for the children. A recent poll https://goo.gl/znmV3C found that 68 percent of Americans are firmly in the school choice camp. Indeed it is often claimed that school choice is a clandestine method of re-establishing segrega tion in schooling again, but don’t tell that to the 72 percent of blacks and 75 percent of Latinos who are pro-school choice. For many of them it is the only life-line they have to escape the failing schools they have no choice but to attend by accident of their zip code. The Democrats claim to stand for the in terests of the poor and underprivileged, but they are all too willing to sacri fice those ideals upon the altar of political expedi ency in praise of their god the unions (indeed, the Department of Education was established by Presi dent Carter to reward the strong support he received from the teacher’s unions). But there’s still hope for the anti-DeVos camp; throw your support behind Rep. Thomas Massie’s bill H.R. 899 which will abolish the Department of Education.
