Page A2 Lake Oconee News Friday, March 17,2017 GREENE COUNTY Store cited for selling alcohol to 19-year-old Katherine Klimt katherine@lakeoconeenews.us During the Morgan County Sheriffs Office recent round of undercover sting operations designed to weed out businesses that sell alcohol to minors, only one out of the 20 locations tested failed to properly identify potential teenage tipplers. Madison Police De partment Detective Wes Thompson presented a summary of the violation at Monday evening’s city council meeting. The of fending gas station was the Pilot Travel Center on Eatonton Road, which failed to ask for the iden tification of a 19-year-old female who attempted to purchase a 24 ounce can of Budweiser Straw-Ber-Ita, a flavored malt beverage containing alcohol. This is the store’s first offense. According to current ordinances, the penal ties for selling alcohol to people under 21 years of age include, for first time violators, an initial seven-day suspension of alcohol sales, completion of city-council designed alcohol awareness classes and a $500 fine. As pre viously reported in this paper, there had been some talk in the city council of possibly revising the civil code to be less punitive toward first offenders. Citing the overwhelm ing compliance observed during this operation, however, councilwoman Chris Hodges asked de tective Thompson if he believed that the penalties currently acted as an effec tive deterrent. Thompson agreed and pointed out that some jurisdictions have far more severe pun ishments in place, but that Madison’s seem to strike the necessary balance. The confluence of projects around Lake Oconee has created a sort of Devil’s Triangle from Greensboro to Madison to Eatonton that has made it difficult for drivers to travel without lengthy delays. According to Kyle Collins of the Georgia Department of Transportation, much of the work is nearing comple tion but work on concrete slab replacement on the in terstate is scheduled to last well into the summer. Patching and sealing work being conducted on Hwy 44 has moved out of the developed area near the Putnam/Greene County line and deeper into Putnam County. The GDOT is trying to keep work to a minimum during the week leading up to the Master’s golf tour nament in Augusta when traffic in the area spikes dramatically. Vegetation removal is still underway on Sparta Highway and should continue well into next week near the intersection of Hwy 44 and Hwy 16. Patching work is also underway on Sparta Highway from the red light in Eatonton to Waterworks Road. Paving work on Hwy 441 has largely been complet ed in Putnam County but crews will still be working in Morgan County for the next couple of weeks. Delays are expected to continue. According to Colllins, the GDOT wants to finish this project as badly as many of the motorists waiting in line every day. As with all projects weather plays a role in com pletion. Work on the interstate from exit 114 to exit 130 is ongoing and will continue through most of the summer. Crews are replacing sections of concrete on the interstate on both sides. The work requires lane closures. Collins said that some motorists complain that lanes are closed and no crews are working, but concrete poured has to have time to cure and has to be tested before lanes are opened. As if that weren’t enough, film crews will close several roads in Madison next week while a film is being shot. From 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Jefferson Street between Hancock and Pine streets will be closed. From 1 until 5 p.m. Wash ington Street between Main Street and Hancock Street will be closed. From 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. intermittent traffic control will be necessary on Hancock Street, Wash ington Street and Jefferson Street.
