Student enrollment down but so are absences Assistant school super intendent Sarah Burbach reports that there are currently 3,062 students enrolled in the Morgan County school system, including PreK, Rutland Academy (GNETS) and CrossRoads. The number of students is down by 17 students from the time of the March number and down 102 students from April of last year. There are 17 tuition-pay ing students which is down from 25 in 2016. The new Foothills Charter Public School has attracted far more students than the Morgan County Board of Education originally antici pated. Three freshmen, one junior and one senior have entered since March 1. Sixty-five (65) MCHS students have enrolled in Foothills since it opened in January. Morgan County’s emphasis on attendance awareness has continued and data shows that every school has a lower percent age of students missing five or more days. CrossRoads attendance is climbing, as well, accord ing to a report prepared by Burbach. The school recently rec ognized 370 students who have had no more than one absence and zero behavior Insure it all. This is the time when the rising, Kindergarten students visit the Primary School to play on the playground, tour the library and eat lunch! The Morgan County Board of Education hosted a “Dad’s Sports Day,” for PreK students and dads/ adults at Morgan County High School, which was organized by high school Physical Education teacher, Anne Stamps, and Early Learning Coordinator, Mimi Young. Wrestling Coach John Robbins recognized state placers as well as senior team members who helped lead the team to a third place finish in state. Wrestler Jody McAlister will graduate with one of the best records in school history, including 178 wins against 34 losses and two state titles. He has also done well in the classroom with a 3.7 GPA, Robbins said. He is headed to Newberry College on a wrestling scholarship. Antonio Robinson finishes his solid career with 132 wins against 45 losses and s state title. He is as yet undecided about his college plans. Sean McElligot won 102 matches and 41 this past year. He is also an honor graduate. He is bound for the University of Georgia. Ladarius Andrews won 34 matches, with 28 of those by pin, Robbins said. He is going to Allen Univer sity. Michael Rhodes and Robert Gibbs both suffered season ending injuries as juniors but bounced back this year to help the team get seven wrestlers into the state competition. Both are headed to the University of North Georgia. Coach Josh Reeves rec ognized senior members of this year’s girls basketball team that qualified for the AAA Final Four, includ ing Autumn Woodard and Salina Fortune. These two members of the Lady Dogs team won four region titles, a state title and made to the Final Four and Elite Eight. Woodard wants to be a doctor and Fortune is inter ested in becoming a veteri narian. Coach Jamond Sims recognized members of this year’s boys team that finished as the state run ner-up in AAA, includ ing Tyrin Lawrence, Alec Woodard and Anthony Cooper. Woodard earned Region 8-AAA Player-of- the-Year as well as All State honors. These three are part of the bright future of MCHS basketball.
