Town hall attendees tour the as-yet-unfinished Canaan House. Katherine Klimt/Staff Town hall meeting showcases progress Katherine Klimt Katherine@lakeoconeenews.us At Thursday evening’s town hall meeting in the Pearl-Burney Communi ty Room of the Gilmore House, city planning director Monica Callahan and historic preservation commissioner Ken Kocher discussed recent develop ments related to communi ty projects and gave town hall attendees a tour of the two recent downtown development authority (DDA) projects. The first topic of discus sion was the upcoming dispersal of the Commu nity Home Investment Program (CHIP) and Community Development Block Program grants that the city of Madison received last year to bring qualifying substandard housing up to code. The $800,000 in funds must be dispersed according to a tight schedule, with 25 percent of the total allotted by July 21, 50 percent by November 30, 75 percent by March 1, 2018, and the full amount no later than July 31, 2018. The first house to qualify will be receiving a new roof and HVAC and wiring updates to ensure the residence is livable and safe. The theme of safety was reiterated as Callahan dis cussed the ongoing effort to provide the small, white and blue reflective yard signs that allow emer gency personnel to locate houses more quickly. These address signs are free, but there are currently few of them in yards where they are needed because some residents have difficulty Katherine Klimt/Staff The beauty parlor is geared towards both women and girls, hence the colorful butterfly decor. Now, the Georgia Initiative for Com munity Housing (GICH) will provide a form that can be filled out and given to a GICH team member, who will then deliver it to the county. In addition, the county is now offering a free sign-up for emergency no tification services CodeRed and Nixel that can provide residents updates about severe weather, criminal activities and local events. Callahan also shared that the DDA was recently awarded a revitalization area strategy score of 19 out of 20 points by the Georgia Department of Communi ty Affairs. This score indi cates how well the city is doing in targeting areas in need of rehabilitation and renewal. Housing Opportunity Commission member Judy Thomas also discussed the success of recent free legal aid clinics, which in February provided will-writing services to area seniors over 50. The next such clinic will be held in July. After discussion of recent developments, Callahan gave attendees a brief overview of two recent projects: the remod eled beauty parlor that is attached to the Gilmore House, and the Canaan Store, which is current ly in progress. The store is owned by local entre preneur Rita Harris and will, upon its completion, feature hot and cold food options. Construction is expected to be complete by May 1, and an early summer opening is planned.
