Oconee Brewing Company cuts ribbon Mark Engel engel@lakeoconeenews.us Greensboro’s first (legal) brewery will open for business on Saturday, May 6. Mayor Glenn Wright and other city offi cials helped cut the ribbon Thursday, April 20 at the Oconee Brewing Company (OBC) on North West Street, just a block from The Yesterday Cafe. It’s located in one of the Mary-Leila Cotton Mill buildings that housed nothing but old machinery and dust since the mill closed 12 years ago. Now four shining new vats are brewing up the three varieties of beer - a Habanero Pale Ale, an IPA and a German-style Kolsch beer - that will be available in the adjacent OBC tasting room on Saturday, May 6. From noon to 8 p.m., anyone age 21 or older who wants a taste will have to buy a SEE BREWERY » A10 GREENE COUNTY Authority: Airport in need of funding Building inspector leaving a surprise to P&Z chairman Mark Engel engel@lakeoconeenews.us In a rare free-form public work session, the Greene County Commis sion discussed a wide variety of issues from improvements at the airport to development of a strategic plan. Along the way, some tidbits of new informa tion were revealed. Commission Chairman Gary Usry and three of the four commissioners, Angela Deering (Dist. l), Jeffrey Smith (Dist. 2) and Ernie Filice (Dist. 4) kicked back in the commission confer ence room with county manager Byron Lombard, assistant county manager Chris Edwards, Planning & Zoning Board chair Doran Samples and Paul McGill and Larry Lenick of the Airport Authority. Commissioner Jonathan Human (Dist. 3) did not attend. MORGAN COUNTY Two teenagers die in wreck Lynn Hobbs lynn@lakeoconeenews.us A vehicle crash Sunday took the lives of two teens who obviously were loved by many in Morgan County. Michael Christopher Rhodes, 18, a senior at Morgan County High School; and Brittany Smith, 19, a 2016 alumnae of MCHS and student at University of North Georgia, both of Madison, were killed when the vehicle they were passengers in hydroplaned and crashed into another vehicle. Three others in the accident - Tracey Rhodes and Adam Rhodes, of Madison, and Kaitlyn Black, of Bethlehem - also were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
