Transformed trash on display at art show Katherine Klimt katherine@lakeoconeenews.us On the evening of Thurs day, April 20, the Madison Artists Guild hosted the opening reception of an unusual art show that will be on display in the Oak Room of the James Madi son Inn until Sept.29. The show, entitled “Reduce . . . Reuse . . . Repurpose,” features work from MAG artists incorporating dis carded, recycled and sus tainable materials, such as old refrigerator doors, bot tle caps, seashells and all kinds of other objects not generally considered “art.” Art of this kind is often called “junk art” or “trash art,” a subgenre of the wider art movement known as “found objects,” which uses non-art objects to create pieces that aim to express deeper truths about society. This movement was pioneered by early 20th century artists like Pablo Picasso and Marcel Duchamp in important works like “Still Life with Chair Caning” (1912) and “Fountain” (1917), respec tively. The work on display in this exhibit is of a consis tently lighter tone than those previous examples, however, including whimsi cal renditions of cats made of old spice tins and gup py-shaped wall hangings comprised of cut aluminum cans.
