Michael Stone michael@lakeoconeenews.us A group of students from the University of Georgia under the di rection of an art professor created a colorful mural with a military theme on a wall in Rutledge last week. The mural was commis sioned by the Rutledge Garden Club (AKA: as The Dirt Girls). Professor Norman and students Selena Roth, Gunnar Tarsa, Garrett Ray, Young Lim Lee and Hannah Dugan arrived in Rutledge on May 8 and put the finishing touches on the mural by Saturday. The lottery on April 5 filled 69 open positions at the highly rated charter school. Last week, LOA CEO Otho Tucker told Lake Oconee News that “possibly 16” of the positions were filled by children who lived outside of Greene County. Now there are apparently only seven. Since its inception 10 years ago, LOA has allowed non-res idents to apply for admission, but, if selected, they would be required to establish residency in Greene County before the child would be admitted. This year, complaints from Greene County residents whose children were not selected led to a Georgia Department of Education ruling that non-res idents should not be included in the lottery. The original bid for $3,880,000 from Kevin Price Construction was whacked by more than $1.15-million when commis sioners voted 3-2 to eliminate some of the planned changes.
