Katherine Klimt/Staff MCHS Continued from A1 in honor of Michael Rhodes, a 2017 graduate who passed away in a car accident at the end of April along with his girlfriend, fellow former MCHS student Brittany Smith, of the class of 2016. Rhodes wore the No. 72 on his football jersey. When his name was called as diplomas were handed out, his classmates stood up to honor his memory. Speeches were given by valedictorian Isabella Scoggin, salutatorian Bobby Jones, superinten dent Dr. James Woodard and MCHS principal Miki Edwards. Scoggins’ speech, in which she recounted her own perseverance and determination to chal lenge herself despite past academic struggles, also warned her fellow gradu ates not to view themselves as “numbers on a page.” Jones recounted his lack of sporting acumen while also addressing the loss that the class so suddenly experi enced in the past weeks. After the diplomas were handed out and the tassels turned, the class locked arms to sing in unison the school’s alma mater. As they clustered at the edge of the field and tossed their mortarboards into the air, they were joined by family and friends in cele bration of their accomplish ments.
