Smith Continued from B7 scales.” The best in outdoor times on the river and uproarious laughter afterwards at the spiffy Holiday Inn Express, managed by Carol Powell, make for an outing to savor, even when sodden rains eventually chase you off the river. With higher temperatures coming about, Jimmy Harris can help you find shoal bass which have been around as far back as the days of the Creek Indians, who fished the waters of the Chatta hoochee not for sport, but for survival. A brief dissertation came about delightfully from North Georgia’s gentleman of the Chattahoochee, a reminder that summer fish ing can still be enjoyed if you know what to do. “Shoal bass,” Jimmy Harris said, “are indigenous to the Chat tahoochee drainage system which includes the Flint River. You can also find them in the Ocmulgee River, but shoal bass are not native to the Ocmulgee. You can fish for shoal bass year round. You can fly fish for them, but you seem to have better luck with con ventional lures, especially in winter when they go down deep in the water. “Interestingly, the fish gets its name from the fact that they like to hang out where the water comes over rocks and shoals. Hook one and bring him to a net and it will make your day.” Even if you stand in the Chattahoochee without a fly rod and a net, your life is enriched by the whisper of the river. I belong to the fra ternity that can’t get enough of the Chattahoochee. COI VIET Ol LAI KE a CONEE FAM HE KF ill ESS a ■ ; ST'i m n n.
