OPAS: Building community through the arts - for 10 years and counting For more than a decade, the Oconee Performing Arts Society (OPAS) has presented a variety of high-quality performing arts experiences in the Lake Oconee area with the mis sion of creating a sense of shared community through the arts. OPAS hosts three sell-out, Broadway-quality performances each year right here in the Lake Coun try’s back yard, bringing in outstanding talent from New York to Los Angeles and beyond. In addition, it presents the hugely popular, family-friendly community concert during the Fourth of July holiday that attracts as many as 1,300. This year’s concert features Chicago tribute band, Brass Tran sit, on Saturday, July 1 ,at the Oconee driving range at Reynolds Lake Oconee. Lake Oconee residents and visitors alike will join OPAS to kick off the Fourth of July weekend with all the hits from Chicago’s golden age. At this year’s concert, OPAS is celebrating its 10th anniversary in a big way. To raise support for performing arts education programs, they are holding a raffle for the chance to win a brand- new 2017 BMW Xl. The drawing for the raffle will be during intermission at the concert. “The summer concert is our biggest event of the year and this year we really wanted to go all out to cele brate the 10th anniversary of OPAS,” OPAS artistic direc tor, Jeffrey Wells said. “How exciting that someone will drive away as the winner of a brand-new BMW.” In addition to the grand prize, a $100 raffle ticket gives the chance to win two other incredible prizes. Sec ond prize is a $7,500 dia mond bracelet from Aurum Jewelry, and third prize is $1,000 cash. Tickets are still available and may be purchased online at www.opas.org or by call ing the OPAS office at 706- 467-6000. Tickets are also available at Athens BMW, Aurum Jewelry, BankSouth Lake Oconee branch and Zapien’s Salon. Although the drawing will be at the con cert, you do not have to be present to win. July 1 will be a red-letter day for the winners of the three fabulous prizes, but there will be many winners that day and all year long. All proceeds from the raffle will support OPAS educa tion programs, which bring the same quality program ming to local students that OPAS brings to the commu nity through several unique approaches that engage young people in the arts. As funding for the arts in schools declines, these programs help enrich the lives of the next generation of artists and arts patrons. OPAS is a nonprofit performing arts organiza tion that relies on commu nity support to continue to present life-enriching per forming arts experiences to Lake Oconee. Visit www. opas.org or call 706-467- 6000 for more information on all OPAS events and how to support OPAS education programs. Stathas Continued from B7 on them. Sometimes feelings and issues get so jumbled up in your mind that you can’t seem to sort it all out. Put ting them on paper can help. In many cases you might well tear up the personal writing later so that it does not later embarrass you or cause unnecessary hardship. The bottom line here is that you have a need to convey a certain message to someone with whom you have difficulty communicat ing. You want to minimize any defensiveness or con frontation for either party, therefore you present your well thought out concerns on paper. The probability of successful communication regarding a challenging topic is best when done in this manner. You may want to give it a try! Dr. Stathas can be reached at 706-473-1780.
