Page A2 Lake Oconee News Friday, June 9,2017 GREENE COUNTY Bend the Trend celebrates grand opening Wil Petty wil@lakeoconeenews.us Members of Greene County’s Chamber of Commerce and business community came together on a warm Friday after noon to celebrate the grand opening of Bend the Trend. The new store sells home decorations and furnish ings, and is now Greene County’s newest business. “Everything has panned out,” Trey Daniels, one of the three owners of the business, said. “I think the end result is way better than we expected. The support in Greene County has been overwhelming.” Daniels, with co-own ers Bill and Susan Mason, welcomed close to 50 members of the business community to their shop. The event ran from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 26. Daniels said all three owners were anxious to get the store up and running and the community had been very welcoming to the three of them. Visitors roamed the new store looking at the various furniture Bend The Trend offers. Many high-end home goods were for sale, ranging from rugs and lamps to dressers and headboards. Various business owners from throughout the county were on hand for the opening. said it is good news for the area’s economy when a new business opens in Lake Country, specifically Greene County. “We are very excited as Greene County is seeing new businesses come to our area,” he said. “This shows how Greene County is continuing to grow as businesses thrive in our community.” Lupton said neighbors of the business were excited to see a new store enter the area. “People were even coming to see what items they were providing as they were unloading and unpacking items off the truck,” he said. The following day, the Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting and grand reopening ceremony for Georgia Butts BBQ, located at 1137 Lake Oconee Parkway in Eatonton. Appetizers for the Bend the Trend opening were provided at the opening by Da Corrado Ristorante in Greensboro. Bend the Trend is a design studio featuring high-end furniture and home goods from around the world. The business is located at 1020 Parkside Commons Suite 101, next to Magnolia Art Gallery. We Can Lake Oconee News, Eatonton Messenger pick up 15 awards The family of newspa pers and magazines under the Smith Communica tions Inc. umbrella picked up 15 awards last Friday when the Georgia Press Association announced the winners of the 2017 Better Newspaper Contest. The Eatonton Messenger picked up seven awards overall, including two for editor Lynn Hobbs. She placed third in Division E for business writing and second for education writing. Former editor Don Richeson won first place in the feature photograph category and was chosen for best photo gallery on a newspaper website contest. He also placed third in the photo essay category. Sports editor Dave Brown won first place in both the serious column and sports column categories. Lake Oconee News picked up six awards in the contest, including third place for layout and design in Division E and a second place for lifestyle coverage. The 2016 football preview pullout placed third in the special issues category. Lake Oconee News editor T. Michael Stone placed first in the sports feature photograph category and also picked up second place in the serious column contest. He placed third place in the humorous column category. Magazines produced by Smith Communications placed second and third in the magazine product division among weekly papers in Georgia. Her topic will be voter empowerment, dis cussing how citizens can make their votes count and their voices heard. The public is welcome to attend. A native of Morgan County, Butler serves on the Morgan County Board of Elections, the Georgia Help America Vote Act Advisory Committee and in 2013, was appointed to serve on the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights as a member of the Georgia Advisory Com mittee. An honors graduate of Pearl High School, she was one of the first 50 African American students to attend the University of Georgia, from which she received a bachelor’s of business administration degree with a major in ac counting.
