CONTRIBUTED A decade of service by Delta Sigma Theta dazzles The Lake Oconee Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. recently celebrated its 10-year anniversary entitled “A Starlit Decade.” The formal event at Rock Eagle 4-H Center’s EMC Senior Lakeside Pavilion in Eatonton and was held in recognition of the char tering of the chapter by 22 women in April 2007. A local trailblazer, Orian Motley, led the charge to have the chapter chartered, which reclaimed to service 19 members of the national sorority residing in the three-county service area who had been inactive for many years. In the true spirit of being a star-studded event, the guest mistress of ceremonies was multi-Emmy Award winning television journal ist and media professional, Mrs. Shaunya Chavis-Ruck- er. The celebration nurtured laughter, music and rem iniscing as members of the chapter, both past and present, as well as the over 300 guests were engulfed in pictures, videos and speeches on the accomplish ments and service provided by the chapter over its 10 years of existence. Atlan ta’s Saxophonist Antonio Bennett & the Neo4 Band rendered sultry sounds of jazz while members of the sorority and guests danced the night away. The highlight of the evening was the Commu nity Impact Awards that were given to multiple or ganizations from within the three-county service area who have made a tre mendous impact in their communities. Student receives $ 1,000 scholarship to pursue dream Seth Wicker, an 18- year-old senior at Putnam County High School, was awarded a $1,000 schol arship from the Oconee Performing Arts Society (OPAS) to pursue his passion of theater. Seth will be attending the Columbus State University theater education program in the fall. Each year, the Oconee Performing Arts Society awards a scholarship to de serving students who desire to pursue an education in the performing arts. “Seth is one of the most respectful, thoughtful and personable young men I have met in a very long time, and we can’t wait to see what wonderful things he accomplishes in the per forming arts” said artistic director of OPAS, Jeffrey Wells. Seth was introduced to theater his freshman year of high school, and he views it as an event that changed his life. Seth credits his school theater directors Jenny Morris, Emily Gibson and Chandler Clarke for rec ognizing his potential and building his confidence. “With the help of this OPAS scholarship, I will be a step closer to achieving my passion” Seth wrote in his scholarship essay. He also recognizes his mother, Dawn Wicker, who en couraged him to follow his dreams. Seth has a 3.6 grade point average and is involved in numerous school ac tivities including the National Honor Society, the Farmers and Mer chants Bank Junior Board of Directors and has per formed in several musicals at Putnam County High School. Outside of school he is active in the community, with his church, Crossroads and has performed at the annual National Associa tion of Mental Illness Walk at Grant Park, Illinois, for the past two years. The Oconee Performing Arts Society is a nonprofit performing arts organiza tion that presents a variety of high-quality perform ing arts experiences, while helping to foster a sense of shared community through the arts. In addition to world class music, theater and dance performances OPAS presents to the com munity, the organization also brings life-enriching performances to over 4,000 local school children each year. With the support of individual and corporate donors, the Oconee Per forming Arts Society is committed to entertain, enrich and educate the local community through the arts.
