fundraising event to ben
efit the Madison-Morgan
County Boys and Girls
Club on Thursday, June 8,
featuring Atlanta-based
author Mary Kay Andrews.
In addition to a book
signing and refreshments
culled from the pages of
Andrews’ latest work, “The
Beach House Cookbook,”
the event also featured a
performance from MMC-
BGC students and a talk by
the CEO of the Pete Nance
Boys and Girls Club in
Greensboro, Bob Mackey.
Andrews is a best-selling
author who has been writ
ing since the early 1990s,
when she published under
her given name of Kathy
Hogan Trocheck. Under her
pen name, she has explored
more southern themes
and, according to her own
speech at the event, aims
to write a “beach book
every year.” Her decision to
write a cookbook this year,
she said, was based on her
memories of Sunday din
ners with her family. The
event’s impressive spread,
featuring everything from
tomato pie to butterscotch
bars, was entirely cooked
according to Andrews’ own
recipes.
To give attendees a
glimpse of what their
donations were benefiting,
MMCBGC students per
formed “My Country ‘Tis of
Thee” and displayed their
art, while two aspiring
young drummers showed
off their skills. Afterwards,
Mackey took the stage to
talk about the importance
of organizations like the
boys and girls clubs, citing
his own experience as a for
mer juvenile parole officer.
