Lovett spoke highly of the com
munity and Smith Communica
tions.
“The Baldwin Bulletin is a
great asset for Milledgeville and
Baldwin County, and we have
certainly enjoyed being a part of
this community,” he said.
“We have also seen how the
growth along the lake has merged
the business in this community
toward Putnam County.
This sale to Mark Smith and
his team is a better fit. They will
make certain that The Bulletin
remains Milledgeville’s commu
nity newspaper.”
Porter said he sees a bright
future for The Bulletin under
Smith’s leadership.
“Mark Smith and his team un
derstand community journalism,
and they will make The Baldwin
Bulletin one of Georgia’s best
community newspapers. We have
certainly enjoyed being a part
of Milledgeville and Baldwin
County, but the growth north
makes this relationship a stronger
place for growing this product.
“This talented group under
stands why a newspaper is so
important to the growth and de
velopment of our communities,
and they will make certain that
the partnership with Milled
geville and Baldwin County and
the readers of this newspaper will
continue to strengthen and grow.”
Smith also announced that his
son, Matt, will serve as general
manager for The Bidletin. Wil
Petty, who has been working for
the Lake Oconee News, has been
named associate editor.
Brandi Harrison will remain
on staff in advertising sales.
Matt Smith said he looks
forward to working with the staff
to produce a quality product.
“I am extremely pleased to have
the opportunity to work with our
enthusiastic Baldwin Bulletin
staff,” he said. “Our goal is to
provide our loyal patrons with the
most factual and pertinent infor
mation possible.”
Mark Smith said he looks
forward to reaching existing
and new readers with a strong
product.
“We are excited to add The
Baldwin Bulletin to our coverage
in the area,” he said. “The Bulletin
has had a solid base of loyal
readers for many years.”
The publisher added that he is
the fifth generation of newspaper
people in his family. Matt Smith
and Mark Smith Jr., who is vice
president of advertising, are the
sixth generation.
The family moved into Lake
Country when they purchased
The Eatonton Messenger in 1956.

“I’ve never worked with
school system in my 30-year
career that has the reserve
levels that you do,” Holcomb
said. Holcomb praised the
school board’s conservative
budgets for its excellent
ratings.
The initial offering was
sold with an interest rate of
1.9 percent.
Holcomb said the bonds
met with such interest when
they were made available
that $82 million in orders
were received for just $15
million in bonds available.
The school system will
spend more than $27 million
to construct and equip
the high school and career
academy and another $18
million to fund the new
middle school.
Total cost of improve
ments is expected to be more
than $46 million, including
the cost of the new transpor
tation facility.
The bonds will be repaid
using sales tax revenues.
Rollback millage rate
Board members are
hoping to hold the line on
the millage despite some
increases in expenditures
coming in the next year.
The school system will
take in more than $30
million in revenue next year
with $16 million coming
from state sources and $13
million in property taxes.
However, the school
system will spend more
than $32 million this year
with $22 million spent on
direct instruction, nearly
$2 million on adminis
tration, $2.2 million on

patrol car to get his citation
book. As he began writing
out his warning citation to
Frails, he asked her how long
maintenance and opera
tions, $1.4 million each on

support services and just

At this point, the BOE

know. When pressed she
told McCannon that he did

funds to make up for the
increase in expenses to
avoid a millage rate hike.
