MMCC holds recognizes volunteer annual meeting Leila Scoggins leila@lakeoconeenews.us he Madison Morgan Cultural Center hosted its annual meeting this week, recognizing an outstanding volunteer, welcoming four new trustees and passing the gavel to a new chairman. The annual meeting was held on Monday, July 17, in the center’s auditorium at 2 p.m. The assembly happens once a year and is their only board meeting that is open to the public. Outgoing Chairman David Buck led Monday’s meeting. It featured updates from various committee chairs including strategic planning committee chair Neil Horstman, funding and development chair Alla Campbell, capital campaign chair Chris Lambert, pro gramming chair Brad Rice, advisory board chair Lyn Hunt, governance commit tee and nominations chair Betsy Morehouse as well as updates from director Kim Brown and reflections from Wayne Vason. Buck gave the treasurer’s report in the absence of treasurer Mary Jones. Neil Horstman presented the MMCC’s newly adopted mission statement, which is divided into two parts to better accommodate grant applications. During Brown’s report she said, “It’s been a busy, challeng ing, rewarding year here at the center. We hosted 28 performances, includ ing two symposiums, eight Chamber Music Festival concerts, eight free and open to the public events, three visual arts openings and exhibitions, eight ed ucation programs, with three outreach programs and 3,900 attendees, for an overall total program at tendance of 13,650 and an estimated 24,000 annual visitors to the museum.” Brown also announced that staff had selected Kathy Lehman as the vol unteer of the year. “She showed uncommon dedication in organizing, encouraging, promoting and supervising the sales of 1,000 tickets for the Lotto Love for the Arts Raffle and bringing in over $54,000 in revenue,” Brown said. Highlights of the meeting included various commit tee chairs speaking about the year’s accomplishments including the landscape and hardscape plan for the entire MMCC property that had been completed by Tunnell & Tunnell, as well as selling all 1,000 Lotto Love for the Arts Raffle tickets and receiving awards from the Georgia Trust for Historic Preser vation’s Sustainable Preser vation Award, the Atlanta Better Buildings Top Per formance Award and the City of Madison Historic Preservation Commission award for Sustainable Pres ervation. During Betsy More house’s governance committee update she announced the retiring trustees were Wes Holt, Ken Kuperburg, Jeff Miller and Carrie Peters-Reid. She also said that Marie Perriman had agreed to extend her term. More house then went on to an nouncing the new trustees that had been nominated and approved by the board. MCPS assistant princi pal and Morgan County native Stacy Chapman and MCHS band director and education pathway teacher Jeffrey Rowser were two of the new trustees an nounced. Annie Hunt Burriss a new Morgan County resident with a lifetime of leadership back ground and Ben Whidby, third generation Whidby Jewelers owner and active leader in Madison and Morgan County affairs were the final trustees an nounced Monday. At the end of the meeting, outgoing board Chairman David Buck was recog nized for three years of service and dedication to the center. Buck then announced the incoming chairman would be Rice. The meeting ended with a photograph for past, present and incoming trustees in front of the center as well as light re freshments in the member room.
