MORGAN COUNTY
Morgan County Back to school rally planned July 29
The Community Health Fair
and Back to School Rally will be
held Saturday, July 29, from 9until
11:30 a.m. on the front lawn of
Morgan Memorial Hospital.
The event is a partnership
between Morgan Memorial
Hospital and Morgan County
Family Connection. Although
both organizations hosted separate
events for numerous years, the two
entities began combining efforts
to host a larger event, the annual
Community Health Fair and Back
to School Rally, in 2008. The col
laboration strengthened the event
and combined resources for added
efficiency.
Over 50 community partners
will be present offering free health
screenings, school supplies and
a wide variety of information on
local resources. Other planned
events include a kickoff celebra
tion with the MCHS cheerleaders
and band, helicopter landing and
a variety of fun activities.
“We want to ensure that all
citizens have access to the re
sources they need to be success
ful...whether that be at home, at
work, or at school,” said Megan
Morris, MMH Director of Devel
opment and Community Rela
tions. “While this isn’t something
we can accomplish on our own,
when we work together with
our 55 community partners we
make great strides in improving
outcomes.
“Statistics show that Morgan
County as a whole ranks fairly
well overall in terms of health
indicators. However, our Com
munity Health Needs Assessment
showed that there are definitely
health disparities between various
sectors of our local population. By
offering free screenings at events
such as our Community Health
Fair and Back to School Rally we
aim to bring resources to those in
dividuals who may not otherwise
seek the advice or care of a doctor.
MMH staff are able to offer blood
pressure, glucose, cholesterol and
bone density screenings and we
partner with WalMart Vision and
Advanced Audiology for hearing
and vision tests.”
INCIDENT REPORTS
Drug trafficking arrest
Greene County deputies arrested a
South Carolina man on drug trafficking
charges on July 11.
Deputy Robert McCannon pulled over
a Nissan Altima on 1-20 for failing to
maintain its lane after he initially pulled
up behind the car because he suspected
the tint was too dark.
After McCannon made contact with
the driver and asked him how dark the
tint was, a passenger spoke up and told McCannon it was
legal. The passenger, later identified as Jerry Jermaine
Davis, 33, of Marion, South Carolina, seemed to be trying to
control the traffic stop, according to the report.
McCannon determined the tint was in fact within the law,
but he said he could smell the odor of raw marijuana coming
from inside the vehicle.
McCannon called for backup and began writing out a
warning for failure to maintain lane.
According to the incident report, McCannon’s suspicions
were raised when he asked how long the group had been in
Georgia. The driver told him a couple of hours, driving down
from Florence, South Carolina, four hours to a cook out.
After Deputy Patrick Paquette arrived, he and McCannon
searched the car and also the passengers.
As McCannon was searching the vehicle, he heard a click
and saw K Pacquette handcuffing Davis after two clear
plastic bag containing suspected ecstacy fell out of his pants.
Davis was arrested and charged with trafficking in
MDMA and possession of marijuana.

Man refuses to leave
hotel room
An out-of-town visitor attempted numerous means of
avoiding expulsion from his hotel room, including obscene
notes and appealing to non-existent government agencies,
before being placed under arrest for trespassing at the
Madison Quality Inn on Monday, July 10.
Hotel manager Hinaben Patel of Marietta called police
around noon to report that a hotel guest who had previously
been warned about disorderly behavior was now refusing
to leave his room in spite of the check-out deadline. Patel
told responding officer Travis Stubbs that Purvish Bhatt,
29, of Hyattsville, Md., had been staying in the hotel since
July 2 and had been already warned by law enforcement
on account of his disruptive behavior toward hotel staff.
She reported that he had been rude to the hotel’s maids,
posting obscene and threatening notes on the door of his
room.
Patel decided to call the authorities when Bhatt refused
to leave his hotel room at the end of his stay. When hotel
staff called him to remind him of his check-out time, he
reportedly became belligerent and asserted that he had in
fact requested to stay longer even though the hotel had no
record of such a request.
When Stubbs initially attempted to speak to Bhatt, he
refused to open his door and told the officer to refer to the
note he left them, which read “[Expletive] off.” Bhatt did
eventually come to the door, but could not speak clearly or
coherently and smelled of alcohol. When Stubbs explained
that Bhatt had to leave the property because he had not
paid for any further days, he said that he did not have to
leave because he was affiliated with the “DIA,” a govern
ment entity that overrides law enforcement.
Stubbs asked Bhatt once more to leave the room, but he
refused and was promptly arrested, DIA credentials not
withstanding. He was cited for criminal trespassing and
transported to the detention center without incident.

Woman arrested for
DUI and possession
A Rutledge woman was arrested on the afternoon of
Wednesday, July 12, for driving under the influence and pos
session of methamphetamine after allegedly falling asleep at
the wheel while parked at a gas pump.
Police were summoned to the Pilot Travel Center on
Eatonton Road shortly after noon and made contact with
the driver, 40-year-old Stacey Haymore. When officers
asked Haymore to step out of her vehicle, she reportedly
appeared very unsteady on her feet and exhibited unusual
mannerisms. Haymore provided the officers with a list
of her prescribed medications, including Oxycodone, but
claimed that she had not taken any of them that day, nor any
other substances that would cause her to be an unsafe driver.
According to the report of responding officer Elliot Kline,
Haymore’s behavior was “strange,” and she “occasionally
appeared to fall asleep during lulls in conversation.” He also
observed her appearing to talk to herself, and her speech
was at times incoherent. While she agreed to undergo field
sobriety testing, she struggled with several of the tests and
was placed under arrest for DUI.
Haymore agreed to provide a sample of her blood, and she
was transported to Morgan Memorial Hospital and then the
detention center without incident. At the detention center,
Kline searched her purse and found several suspicious items,
including a clear plastic bag containing crystalline residue,
another small bag containing a crystalline substance, and
two prescriptions that were not made out to Haymore.
Though the report does not indicate whether testing was
completed to identify the substance, Haymore was charged
with possession of methamphetamine in addition to the
DUI. She has also been charged with suspended vehicle reg
istration. This is reportedly Haymore’s second DUI offense.

Gator stolen
Yet another family in Madison fell victim to theft this past
week in the latest in a rash of such incidents in the area. The
victims were robbed of buckets, rakes, alpaca halters and a
John Deere Gator all-terrain vehicle worth approximately
$12,000.
The victims, husband and wife residents of Madison,
called the police around 9 a.m. the morning of Thursday,
July 13, to report that their fence had been cut and they had
been robbed. The Gator, a model XUV 550 S4, had been left
outside for the night. Responding officer Christopher Lash
and investigations corporal Chase Young were able to locate
the damaged portion of the fence, which appeared to have
been cut with some kind of hand tool. A wooden portion of
the wire fence had also been pried off and tossed about 15 feet
away from the cut section. The officers observed tire tracks
near the opening, which was found to be too narrow for a
normal vehicle to pass through but which matched exactly
the dimensions of a similar ATV owned by the victims’
daughter. The officers then concluded that the Gator must
have been driven off the property and loaded elsewhere.
One of the victims said that while the ATV had been left
outside, the key had not been left in it due to concern over
other recent thefts of similar small vehicles and lawnmowers
in the area.
The remainder of the stolen property was in the bed of the
Gator, according to the victim statements. The stolen Gator
has a distinctive feature not shared by other examples of the
model: a rear-view mirror installed by the husband.
Deputy Lash was not able to lift any fingerprints from the
scene due to the vehicle being taken from out in the open,
and as there are no residents close to the victims’ property,
he did not canvass the area. A section of the vandalized fence
was removed for further examination.
