GREENE COUNTY
Council considers canceling cops
Mark Engel

Greensboro city councilman
Vince Lewis dropped a budget
bombshell at Monday night’s
regular council meeting.
He wants to eliminate the
Greensboro Police Department
(GPD) and have the Greene
County Sheriff s Department take
on the responsibility for patrolling
inside the city limits.
Including police officers and
office staff, Lewis says there are
about 17 employees who would be
affected. Some of them could be
hired by the county if the proposal
becomes reality.
Lewis says the GPD represents
a cost of about $1.5 million dollars
which is half of the entire city
budget.

asked Greene County Sheriff
Donnie Harrison to put together
a proposal that “at a minimum

security of our citizens.”
Lewis said the cost would be

Council sets
millage rate
Katherine Klimt
katherine@lakeoconeenews.us
In a called meeting on the evening
of Thursday, Aug. 3, the city council
held public hearings for and ultimately
unanimously approved the proposed
2018 millage rates for the city of
Madison and the special tax districts
of downtown and the corridor (inter
state), respectively. As with the county
millage rates that were recently
approved by the commission, the taxes
are consistent with the 2017 budget
and were uncontroversial, provoking
no comments from the public.
