A group of more than 60 people
crowded into New Springfield
Baptist Church Tuesday evening
to remember Charles David
Robinson, the Woodville man who
was shot and killed by a Greene
County deputy on Aug. 25 follow
ing a traffic stop.
The group also discussed
methods to counter police bru
tality, a problem that has received
national attention in recent years.
“This is serious business that
brings us here this evening.... There
is something terribly amiss in our
community,” said Roi Johnson,
pastor of New Springfield Baptist
Church to the crowd, opening the
meeting. “We want to get some
things out in the open...”
“I think this is important not
only because of the tragedy that
happened in Greene County but
throughout our country,” said
Pastor L. T. Crawford. “We need
to rattle some cages because this
cannot go on. ... We want to make
sure justice will reign in this situ
ation.”
Several members of Robinson’s
family spoke to the crowd, sharing

Congressman: Washington is ‘messed up’
Mark Engel
engel@lakeoconeenews.us
If you think you are frustrat
ed with gridlock in Washington
D.C., just listen to 10th District
Congressman Jody Hice.
“It seems like everything is
all messed up, at every level,”
the Republican representative
told a community gathering at
The Landing - Reynolds Lake
Oconee in Greensboro last
Thursday night.
Hice, 57, is serving his
second term in the House of
Representatives. Hice serves
on the House Oversight and
Government Reform Commit
tee and the House Natural Re
sources Committee. He’s also a
member of the very conserva
tive House Freedom Caucus
During the congressional
recess, he’s been visiting the
district from Monroe to Milled-
geville. On Aug. 31, he spoke at
the Rotary Club of Greene and
Putnam counties, taught a gov
ernment class at Lake Oconee
Academy and fielded questions
at a forum presented by a com
munity group called Home-
owners Together.
“Right now the Democrats’
sole focus is to obstruct and
harm this president,” he told
the group.
Hice says the House has
passed 300 pieces of legisla
tion, but the Democrats are
blocking the Republican lead
ership’s effort to consider the
bills in the Senate.
“The Senate can’t get
anything across the finish line
because of their silly filibuster
rule of 60 votes,” he told the
group, referring to the Senate’s
rule that requires three-fifths
majority to cut off debate and
allow a vote on most bills. Re-

Robert Lanier
Lanier announces candidacy for Madison mayor
“After having served over 25 years
in public service in DeKalb County,
Georgia, I moved to Morgan County,
the county where my mother was
born,” Lanier said. “Sixteen years ago,
I purchased our present home at 472 S.
Main Street next door to the Madison
Morgan County Cultural Center. Many
of my friends, neighbors and associates
have urged me to consider seeking the
office of mayor of Madison. After many
weeks of prayer and thoughtful consid
eration, I have decided to offer myself,
again, for an opportunity to serve the
people of my community. “
Lanier has 10 years experience as a
police officer, eight of which were as a
homicide detective and almost 16 years
from four terms as an elected member
of the DeKalb County Board of Com
missioners. For several years he was a
presiding officer or chairman.
“I am uniquely qualified to bring
those years of experience to make
Madison the ‘best small historic town in
Georgia’ again,” Lanier said. “If elected
,1 commit to bring an unprecedented
relationship of cooperation between
the city and the Morgan County Board
of Commissioners. By working with
the Georgia Legislature and with my
