Page A12 Lake Oconee News Friday, September 8,2017 Jody Hice pays a visit to Reynolds Lake Oconee. Mark Engel/Staff Hice Continued from A1 publicans have only 52 Senators. “I personally had a talk with [Senate Majority Leader] Mitch McConnell urging him to get rid of that 60 vote rule. He’s not going to do it.” Still, Hice says there are many good things that have happened during the first eight months of the Trump administration that, he emphasizes, the media is not talking about. Here is part of the message he delivered: Unemployment - “In eight months, we now have the lowest unemployment rate in 16 years. That’s great news. That’s a major change in direction from where we’ve been going in the last 16 years.” Wall Street - “It seems every week there is a new record at the stock market.” Defense - “The American military is coming back.” Draining the Swamp - “We called for the removal from office some 23 various heads of differ ent departments because of waste and fraud and abuse and their position as head of it all. We suc ceeded in removing 22 out of 23. Where is that in the media. That’s a pretty awesome stat.” On term limits, Hice admitted that he has changed his mind. While campaigning in 2014 for his first term in the House, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, he said he thought term limits were nec essary and indicated he would likely limit himself to 12 years (six terms) in the House. “I ran on term limits,” he said last Thursday, “and I will honor that but, in all honesty, I’ve had a change of heart on term limits... if you have term limits, the ones who will be running the show will be the lobbyists and the staff... That’s a real concern for me.” Near the end of the meeting, Hice was asked if the Republican party realizes that unless they pull together, they’re not going to get anything done. “It’s not intention of districts nor representatives to go up there and sit in the corner and do exactly what your leadership tells you to do...it’s supposed to be messy,” Hice said. “You get up there and every body’s got a different viewpoint, a different perspective. You put all the ideas on the table. You get in there and duke it out with these ideas. Everyone is wrestling through it - compromise here, work here - and that whatever can pass with 218 votes comes out and it is what it is.” He added, “It is a sausage factory.” MORGAN COUNTY Gas thief arrested Although gas prices only rose about 20 percent as a result of Hurricane Harvey, a Monroe man decided the increase was too much. According to Capt. Chris topher Bish, the Morgan County Sher iffs Office has tracked down a man who filled up his vehicle at two different Morgan County convenience stores last week and didn’t pay for his fuel. The sheriffs office issued a wanted alert on Facebook, Twitter and NIXLE for the man on theft of service charges last Friday. Not long after that several citizens provided information that led to the arrest of James G. Shelton for both incidents. The first incident occurred on Aug. 29 at the Valero Gas Station on Hwy 83 at Sandy Creek Road and the second on Aug. 31 at the River Store on Hwy 278 and Apalachee Road. According to the press release issued by the sheriffs office, “The incident is a true testament to the partnership between law en forcement and the community via social media.” - T.
