Golfing News -^isX Justin Thomas became the PGA ' Tour’s FedEx Cup champion on Sunday. It was no surprise to anyone who saw him power his way to scoring records, his first major at the PGA Championship and more PGA Tour victories than any other golfer this season. Five shots behind to start the final round and needing to play well to have a shot at the FedEx Cup, he nearly won the Tour Championship with two late birdies, only for his 25-foot birdie on the 18th snap hard to the left in front of the cup. Thomas won the $10 million bonus, along with second-place prize money of $945,000 that pushed him over $10 million for the year to win the money title. LAKE WATER TEMPERATURE - Mid 80s LARCEMOUTH BASS - FAIR - The slightly cooler weather prior to last week's storm has been replaced with hot weather again. The water temperatures have not dropped much and cooler temperatures will have to happen before a real change occurs. Some bass are shallow around docks, shallow structures and grass beds. Good lure choices for those fish in shallow water include Carolina and Texas rigged red and green worms and on topwater plugs especially early in the morning. For fish that remain in deeper water (ledges, humps and main lake points) in 7-24 feet, a crankbait (Strike King 5XD, 6XD, 10XD), a Carolina rigged worm and a football jig are good choices. CRAPPIE - VERY GOOD - The crappie bite is the best bet now. The crappie are located around brush piles and underwater trees where they will stay until Fall arrives. Use your locater to find big underwater trees that might hold a good number of fish. You might have to go to several plots of trees before you find the magic tree that holds fish. Once the fish are found, both minnows and jigs will entice a bite. The other options are to troll jigs over the treetops. HYBRID/STRIPED/WHITE BASS - FAIR/POOR - Fishing continues to be slow. A few fish are available at daybreak at the dam area where spoons and popping corks with jigs attached might get you a few fish. The pipeline when Georgia Power is generating has slowed but might give anglers a chance on spoons and jigs. CATFISH - GOOD - The catfish can be found in deeper coves and on main lake ledges and channels. They will move into the coves at night to feed. Best baits are live shad and bream or cut baits from shad and bream. Contributed Threadfin shad are the most important food source for game fish in Lake Sinclair and Lake Oconee. Bobby Peoples Outdoor Columnist Game fish, such as largemouth bass, crappie, striped/hybrid/white bass and some catfish, depend on baitfish for the majority of their food. Baitfishes in area lakes are comprised pri marily of minnows, bluegill and shad. All game fish are prone to eat their young or the young of other game fish, but that is a seasonal thing after the spawn and it does not comprise a large portion of the game fish’s diet. The most important baitfish in both Lakes Oconee and Sinclair are shad, and there are two dis tinctly different species of shad in the lakes. The two types are threadfin shad and gizzard shad. Some parts of the country call the threadfin shad “yellowtails” due to the yellow coloration found on their tails. Look closely, especially under lights, and the threadfin shad exhibits a number of colors. Even though the thread fin shad can grow to 6 to 9 inches in some waters, they are generally found to measure up to 2 to 4 inches in area lakes. Due to their small size, threadfin shad are the perfect size baitfish for crappie, largemouth bass and striped/hybrid bass to feed on. The threadfin shad likely provides upward of 80 percent or more of the game fish diet in area lakes. They are abundant in both Lakes Oconee and Sinclair. They spawn in the spring during the month of May along lake shorelines and, during that spawn, anglers target game fish that have moved to shoreline areas to feed on the shad. Some shad will also spawn in the late summer. Threadfin shad feed primarily on plankton, but occasionally they will eat the larvae of other fish. Anglers targeting baitfish will often use live shad, especially when targeting striped/hybrid bass and will use a cast net to catch the live shad. The baitfish, when caught in this manner, must be kept in a round aerated tank or they will quickly die. The threadfin shad cannot tolerate temperatures below 35 degrees and often during the winter they will suffer and die from the cold water. The second type of shad in area lakes is the gizzard shad. The gizzard shad grows to a much larger size than the threadfin shad. When it reaches about 6 inches in length, it no longer is a food source, except for the largest game fish in the lake. They are generally found to range in size from 4 to 15 inches and have been reported to reach up to two pounds in size. The gizzard shad feeds on plankton when small but later feeds on algae and disintegrated matter on the lake bottom. The threadfin shad and gizzard shad look somewhat similar when small, but the easiest way to tell these two shad apart is the yellowtails of the threadfin. Also, the threadfin has a distinguish ing purple spot near the gill plate on each side. The threadfin shad spends the majority of its life in or near deep water, except during the spawn and in the fall when they move back to shallow water. They school in large numbers and can be found in almost any depth of water. The gizzard shad, on the other hand, spends a good deal of its life in rather shallow water and tends to avoid really deep water. Both school in large numbers and at times can be found schooling together. After the spring spawn, the threadfin shad con gregate in large schools for safety reasons and can be found during the summer on points, ledges and humps. Not by chance, those are excellent locations for anglers to find game fish like largemouth bass and striped/hybrid bass. As the summer progresses, the shad will move deeper, and the game fish will follow the shad. Then, as fall arrives, the shad move to shallow, well-oxygenated water to feed on plankton. This presents anglers with an excellent opportunity to catch a variety of fish as they feed up for the winter ahead. Shad become the one key ingredient to an angler’s success during the fall fishing season. This migration by the shad to shallow water is about ready to begin. All we need are some cooler temperatures. As the water temperature drops through the 70s and 60s, the game fish begin feeding on shad that have taken up resi dence in large schools in the cooler oxygenated water in creeks and large coves. The fall fishing season can last for several weeks depending on the weather. Once the water tempera ture reaches the middle 50s, the lakes enter the winter fishing season. More about that later in the year. For now, anglers can only hope the hot weather we are now having goes away so the fall fishing season can begin. Good fishing and see you next week.
