He said he was impressed by McCom- mons’ ability to slide over to a new position nearly midway through the season. “I think he handled it really well,” Crumbley said. “Ash, he liked being quarterback, but he wasn’t mentally prepared, and Will is probably the most mentally prepared out of everyone. He knows the plays, knows what to do. He’s on it.” Bradley said he periodically quizzed McCommons last week to make sure he was prepared. “He handled it fine,” Bradley said. “I drilled him all week, asking him his reads and what’s he doing with this pressure and watch out for this guy blitzing and he handled it well.” McCommons and the rest of the offense were aided by a strong defensive performance from Crumbley and a few others. Less than two minutes into the game, Crumbley picked off a pass from the Coastal quarterback and returned it for a touchdown. He recorded another pick-six early in the second half. Crumbley said he’d had pick-six es before Friday night, but they never get old. “It’s like you’re taking candy from a baby, man,” he said. “It feels good, just to shove tacklers off.” So far this season, Crumbley’s been the Patriots’ biggest star. He seemingly always scores multiple touchdowns and is a force on defense. Bradley said, if Crumbley keeps up his hot start to the season, then the Patriots might be in for a special year. “So far, he’s doing very, very well,” Bradley said. “I just hope he keeps it up. I don’t want to jinx anything, but as long as he keeps playing the way he can play, we’ll be fine. Everybody else just needs to catch up and play how they can play. We still haven’t played to our potential.” By the end of the game, Crumbley had 10 total tackles in addition to his interceptions. Caleb Wood led the team with 12 tackles. Kanton Crawford had nine tackles, including five sacks, and Ty Webb had eight. Logan Gentry recorded two sacks, too. After the game, McCommons said it was a nice win for the Patriots but there is still work to be done in order to be successful moving forward. “We were a little sloppy,” he said. ‘We’ve still got to fix some things up before we start playing as good as we can, but I think it was a pretty good win.” NGA hosts Covenant Christian this Friday. It will be the Patriots’ homecoming game.
