Page A10 Lake Oconee News Friday, October 6,2017 GREENE COUNTY ATLAS Center plowing right ahead Dave Brown dave@lakeoconeenews.us After two years of fundraising, ATLAS Ministry has broken ground and moved earth at its building site adjacent to Greene County schools on Highway 44. “The site was challenging in a number of ways, but we have a talented group of architects and engineers dealing with the issues,” said ATLAS Ministry executive director Rob Mitchell. According to Mitchell, con struction of the 15,000-square feet ATLAS Center is slated to begin later this month. We also work simultaneously with parents to help them achieve their God-given potential.” Oconee Construction Services is the general contractor for the ATLAS Center. Mitchell said despite the site chal lenges, construction of the ATLAS Center is on schedule and should be open at some point in the first half of 2018. Morton james@lakeoconeenews.us A string of over night vehi cle thefts in the Cedar Lakes and Valley Farms neigh borhoods between Sept. 24 and 25 resulted in several firearms being stolen. According to police reports, thieves got away with a 9 mm pistol with three 15 round capacity mag azines, a blue steel Smith & Wesson .38 special and a Smith & Wesson Airweight revolver; residents also said a GoPro video recorder, an iPod, several flashlights and cash went missing. All of the cars were unlocked during the crime. “I think it was kids,” said Mark Smith Jr. who had $45 taken from his wallet. A 2015 Ford Escape was also listed as one of the vehicles broken into, but no information on that vehicle was provided in the report. Thieves broke into two Jeeps last Friday night on Westminster Way. The thieves took two checkbooks, a Yeti tumbler worth $40 and a leather briefcase worth an estimat ed $300 out of a 2012 Jeep Wrangler and $500 cash from a 2016 Jeep Cherokee.
