Page B6 Lake Oconee News Friday, October 6,2017 LAKE COUNTRY LOLA launches fundraiser, breaks record The Lake Oconee Ladies Auxiliary to Elks Lodge No. 2849 wrapped up the first fundraiser of the new fiscal year on July 28. All proceeds from the raffle were donated to the Aid- more Children’s Center in Conyers. Aidmore addresses the needs of youth and fam ilies in crisis throughout the state. In addition to operat ing a residential facility in Conyers, Aidmore coordi nates therapeutic foster care programs through three satellite offices in Dalton, Savannah and Valdosta. Chairman, Roe Rothwell, and her committee, includ ing Chris Kemmerer, Cindy Estle, Susan Zimmer and Joyce Huston, initiated the Sports Raffle Basket project in early April. The list of contributors includes Georgia Butts, Lake Oconee Detail Shop, Sweet Kneads, Studio 800, Reynolds Lake Oconee, Pickle Barrel Cafe, El Sitio Mexican Grill, Yes terday Cafe, Cafe 44, Filet Steak & Seafood, Dairy Queen, Parkside 8 Theatre and Memory Lane Museum. Ticket sales began on June 1 when the basket was put on display at the Lodge. Tickets were sold by LOLA and Elks members. Top sell ers were LOLA members Kim Robinson and Suzi Bauch, with Elk member Tommy Washburn taking third place. Shown here is Andy McClurk whose winning ticket yielded an array of gifts valued at more than $2,000. This seventh annual Sports Raffle Basket netted $5,827 for Aidmore. The scholarship fund is a min imum ten-year commit ment that awards qualified students in Greene County the opportunity to pursue their college or vocational dreams. Students can fulfill their educational requirements for up to four years if they continue to meet the obligations of the scholarship. Two deserving young people from Greene County High School received the Lawton Scholarship in May 2017: Maria Moreno Rodriguez and Kenyatta Hutchinson. Both young women are attending the University of Georgia. She has joined the Hispanic Stu dent Association and is considering HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America). She has also had some fun as a freshman, joining hundreds of oth ers in Sanford Stadium to watch the solar eclipse. Maria says of the Lawton Scholarship, “It is more than just a scholarship; it is an opportunity for me to learn from my mentors and grow as an individual.” Hutchinson is working toward a major in mar keting with a minor in human services. She, too, is involved on campus in an organization called Georgia Daze, which exists to inshe finds “game day” in Athens to be an amazing experience. She says that the tra ditions surrounding the game are exciting and are her favorite part of the day. She also appreciates the opportunities that the Lawton Scholarship has brought her, saying, “The Lawton Scholarship means everything to me. It made my dream of attending the University of Georgia a reality. I am very thankful for [the Lawton’s] guid ance and support thus far.” The first Lawton schol ars, Darrell Evans and Tionna Thornton, are also graduates of Greene County High School. They each began their soph omore year this fall at Georgia College and State University and Augusta University, respectively. The Lawtons established the direction and purpose of their Scholarship Fund in 2014, which is to inspire hope, build futures, and transform the lives of teens in Greene County. The Lawtons are inter ested in supporting stu dents with all types of dreams for their futures, including two- and four- year degrees as well as programs for job training that do not require college but will take participants directly into the job mar ket upon successful com pletion. The Lawton Fam ily Scholarship Fund is administered by ATLAS Ministry, which has been an active part of Greene County since 2006 as a Christ-centered commu nity resource that works with families who are com mitted to setting their lives on a healthy and produc tive path. The Lawton Family Scholarship is open to all graduating seniors at Greene County High School, Lake Oconee Academy and Nathanael Greene Academy. Plans are being made to hold parent meetings at each school in order to distrib ute information about the Scholarship. Students will also be able to pick up an application packet from their counselor beginning in October.
