Page A12 Lake Oconee News Friday, October 27,2017 LAKE COUNTRY Candidate promises plenty of free stuff Dave Brown dave@lakeoconeenews.us If you went to Bernie Sanders’ house last Thursday night, took a hard left and ended up in the craft room at the Club at Del Webb last Thursday night, there was a Democrat candidate for Georgia’s 10th Congressional District offering lots (and lots) of free stuff. Dr. Richard Winfield, who received his Doctorate inPhilosophyatYaleandhas taught at the University of Georgia since 1982, wants to unseat Republican incumbent Jody Hice. If elected, Dr. Winfield, who seems like a very nice guy, has radical plans for not only Georgia’s future, but the nation’s as well. “The decline of unionization is directly related to the stagnation of wages,” Dr. Winfield pointed out, “and there should be mandatory collective bargaining that includes employees on a corporation’s board of directors.” Dr. Winfield wants to go beyond, way beyond, the mandatory $15 per hour min imum wage popularized by left-leaning politicians in America. He strongly suggests $20 as a starting point. “More and more, people can’t afford to pay for child care... or elder care,” said Dr. Winfield to a group of approximately a dozen people enjoying wine and banana bread at the Club at Del Webb. In addition to proposingthe $20 minimum wage, Dr. Winfield had other ideas he wants to bring to Washington: Free public child care and elder care; Government-paid child allowances of $500 per month for each child in a family; Free insurance with no co-pay and no deductible; Fair housing for everyone where nobody can be evicted or foreclosed upon justbecause they don’t have money; and Free legal representation for both criminal and civil cases. Dr. Winfield talked about a new Social Bill of Rights where he would pay for the new programs by tapping into the private wealth of the wealthy one-percenters in America. “This is a campaign like no other before,” said Dr. Winfield. “This will change not only the 10th District, but also the nation. It will be a way of making capitalism ethical.” The 10th District is located in the north eastern part ofthe state. The district includes the Baldwin, Barrow, Butts, Glascock, Greene, Hancock, Jasper, Jefferson, Johnson, Lincoln, McDuffie, Morgan, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Putnam, Taliaferro, Walton, Warren, Washington and Wilkes counties. It also includes portions of Clarke, Columbia, Gwinnett, Henry and Newton counties. Dr. Winfield said he will take an official leave of absence from UGA in January to file his candidacy, other announced candidates for the 2018 election include Democrats Kellie Collins and Chalis Montgomery, as well as Independent candidate Patrick Moore. Melinda Ryder, chairman of the Greene County Democrats, said she liked what she heard from Dr. Winfield. “Richard Winfield is a formidable Congressional candidate with solid ideas for economic growth and community devel opment,” said Ryder. “Democrats are fortunate to have exem plary candidates for 2018 and, regardless of who wins the primary next year, the 10th District will be able to send a Representative to Washington who will vote to better our lives, pull us together as people and keep us safe.” Dave Brown/Staff Dr. Richard Winfield has radical plans for the nation's economy.
