Page A6 Lake Oconee News Friday, October 27,2017 PUTNAM COUNTY Man goes from hospital to jail after running from cops Lynn Hobbs/Staff The Chevrolet Suburban that was crashed while being chased by sheriff's deputies last Thursday is seen in Eatonton as it is towed from the scene of the wreck. The driver, Richard Holt Oliver, was initially hospitalized for injuries sustained in the wreck. Lynn Hobbs lynn@lakeoconeenews.us An Eatonton man, whose court case was continued last Thursday, led authorities on a high-speed chase later that day that ended in him being hospitalized after he crashed his SUV. Now released from the hospital, Richard Holt Oliver, 55, of 101 Pinewood Drive, Eatonton, is in Putnam County Jail on charges of fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement officers and possession of arms by con victed felon and first offender probation. He was arrested Friday, Oct. 20, and will face other charges in connection with the incident, Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills said. Holt was in Putnam County State Court Thursday morn ing, Oct. 19, appearing before Judge R. Michael Gailey Jr. because he had violated a family violence protective order in July by calling his estranged wife, whom he was ordered not to have any contact at all with. Oliver’s case was continued because “he was drunk in court that morning, or some thing,” Putnam County Chief Deputy Sheriff Russell Blenk said. “He had an attitude, not to the extent to be arrested, but enough for the case to be continued.” Not long after that, a call came in to the sheriffs office that a man was at the estranged wife’s house on Kingfish, knocking on the door and holding a gun in his hand, Blenk said. The woman was not home, and a neighbor had made the call. “When they described the man and his vehicle, I said ‘that’s probably Oliver,”’ Blenk said. The deputy responding to the scene saw Oliver at Terry’s One Stop on Scuffleboro Road, and when the deputy stopped there, Oliver took off in his Chevrolet Suburban. A chase ensued along Scuffleboro Road, heading toward Pea Ridge Road. Oliver was traveling approxi mately 20 mph over the speed limit, the chiefdeputy said, but he was not passing any other drivers or running anyone off the road. After traveling about one mile, he turned onto Old Copelan Road, where he ran oversomesandin the road, lost control of his Suburban, went offthe road and slammed into a tree on the 180 block of Old Copelan, according to Blenk. Oliver sustained a head injury in the crash and was taken by ambulance to Navicent Health hospital in Macon, where he was admit ted for treatment. “He lost control of his gun when he wrecked,” Sills said, noting it was a Ruger 22 automatic pistol. “He got out of his vehicle with a hammer, so he can thank the Lord he’s still here today, because if I think you’re going to hit me in the head with a hammer, I’m going to (use deadly force),” the sheriff added. Meanwhile, another phone callhad come into thesheriffs office that Oliver had gone to his stepdaughter’s house on Gregory Lane and fired his weapon into the unoccupied house. “Evidence confirms he did shoot at the house on Gregory Lane and charges will be added later for that,” Sills said Tuesday morning. Before I go any further, let me say that I am not speakingforgreat-grandson extraordinaire Cameron Charles Yarbrough, who is a shrewd investor in the stock market (with some help from a few friends) and would be bowled overtoknowthatthe Dow has gone over 23,000, except he is busy getting a helluva good education in a public school. I know one person who knows you very well and has been in your office a number of times. He says that, in private, you are much more low key, thoughtful and possess a good sense of humor than your public persona would indicate. He also says you don’t take advice from people who are in a position to give it. With all due respect, no one is smart enough to never need some “Dutch-uncle” advice on occasion. As background, over my past career, I dispensed Dick Yarbrough Guest Columnist advice — sometimes not what they wanted to hear — to the CEO ofthe eighthlarg- est corporation in America and to the man who cre ated and executed the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta. Both, like you, were the smartest men in the room; but, unlike you, they were smart enough to know what they didn’t know and they listened. Ihope you will. First off, you are no longer building big buildings. You are the president of the United States. Act more presidential. Stowthe public insults. I find it incompre hensible that the leader of the free world would engage in Twitter battles with late night TV hosts and entertainers. You give them a credibility they don’t deserve. Ignore them. They aren’t worth your valuable time. Same with “fake news.” The national media doesn’t necessarily fake the news, but they can slant it with an adjective here, an adverb there and then toss in a snarky headline for good measure. I dealt with the national media for much of my career. They live in a cocoon. Inside the Beltway, they are big stuff, but do we believe them out here in the sticks? Only if we are predisposed to their point of view, meaning liberal. The media need to dismount their high horse and do a bit of soul-searching as to how their credibility has dropped with the general public. But they buy their ink by the barrel, so that’s one fight you won’t win. You have made your point about fake news. Let’s move on. Cut the hyperbole. Everything is not “the big gest, greatest, most out standing, very wonderful, etc.” That is real estate talk. You aren’t in the real estate business anymore. You are running a country. Lower the rhetoric. It is interesting to contrast your style with our other “outsider” president, Ronald Reagan. I wouldlove to see him dealing with this frac tious Congress. No question he would prevail. One of my friends was the late Larry Speakes, Mr. Reagan’s press spokesman. A nervous State Department, afraid of upsetting Gorbachev, would expungethe line, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” The president would additbackin. Backandforth this went until Reagan asked everyone if they knew who was president of the United States. “You are, sir,” they replied. “Then put the line back in and leave it.” No rants. No public histrionics. Just being president. You are doing some good things in getting us out of a government, not of laws, but of capricious and arbi trary regulations. Too bad it gets lost in some inanely stupid tweets — like how you are smarter than the people you have selected for your Cabinet. Why is that necessary? In short, drop the reality star shtick and be our pres ident. Unite us; don’t divide us any worse than we already are. The Chardonnay- sipping crowd hates you. The red meat crowd loves you. Most of the rest of us are somewhere in between. We would feel a lot better if you quit playing president and acted like one.
