Friday, October 27, 2017 Lake Oconee News Page A9 PUTNAM COUNTY Retired Eatonton assistant fire chief dies at 71 Lynn Hobbs lynn@lakeoconeenews.us A retired assistant fire chief with the local fire department died Saturday, and those who trusted their lives to him are mourning and have planned a special honor for his funeral. William “Bill” Harper, 71, died after a lengthy illness, friends said. “When you’ve done as much together as we had, you have a bond with one another,” retired Eatonton Fire Chief Arthur Linch said, “especially like in firefighting, where you really depend on each other. I knew he had been really sick, but it was sad to hear he died.” Harper served as a volunteer fire fighter with the Eatonton-Putnam Fire Department for 25 years. He rose to the rank of lieutenant, then assistant fire chief in the 1980s, accordingto current Eatonton Fire ChiefEugene Hubert. Harper hadbeen retired for 15 years. “After he retired, and even after he got so sick, he still stayed active with us, comingto our suppers and to parades, even as sick as he was,” Hubert said. “He was an excellent firefighter,” he added, his voice trailing off. Linch, who served as fire chief when Harper was an assistant chief, agreed. “Some of the fire calls were pretty dan gerous, but we survived,”he explained. “You really could depend on Bill. He gave 100 percent to everything he did.” Harper was a lieutenant when Hubert first joined the fire department. “He was very concerned with everything about fighting fires,” Hubert reminisced. “He lived on Winchester, Glenn Marshall lived on Grove Street, and I lived on Hwy. 16, and every time the alarm went off, the three of us met at the same time. Within seconds of each other, we were pulling up in our four-wheel drive trucks. It was the whole county back then, because we didn’t have county fire stations. So, we fought alot of fires together.” After the funeral Wednesday morning, Harper’s casket was carried to Eatonton Memorial Cemetery atop the Eatonton Fire Department’s Engine 39, the fire truck normally used in parades. Hubert said it will be the first time that has been done, and nothing is more fitting for someone as dedicated to fighting fires as Harper was. Lake Country Crime Reports GREENSBORO POLICE On Sunday, Oct. 15, officers arrested Carletha Briana Jernigan of 204 Foster Terrace, Greensboro. Jernigan was charged with no headlights one-half hour after sunset and driving while unlicensed. On Sunday, Oct. 15, officers responded to 1180 C. Weldon Smith Drive, Greensboro, in reference to an alarm activation. All windows and doors were secured. On Sunday, Oct. 15, officers arrested Darrell Geeter of 1341 North East Street, Greens boro. Geeter was charged with simple battery under the family violence statue. On Monday, Oct. 16, officers responded to 104 Stewart Parkway, Greensboro, in reference to a complaint of fraudulent activity. The complainant stated that she sent two wire transfers totaling $151,971 to false accounts. The incident was turned over to investigations. On Wednesday, Oct. 18, officers issued a criminal trespassing warning to James Barrett of 209 North Laurel Avenue, Greensboro, for the property of Ingle's lo cated at 1480 East Broad Street, Greens boro. On Wednesday, Oct. 18, officers responded to 1720 South Main Street, Greensboro, in reference to an alarm activation. All windows and doors were secured. On Friday, Oct. 20, Officers arrested Darnell Edward Jones of 403 South Walnut Street, Greensboro. Jones was charged with ag gravated assault. For the week of Oct.15-21, the Greensboro Police Department responded to one acci dent and two citations were issued. GREENE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE Carman E. Torres, 28 was arrested Oct. 18 on a warrant out of Jonesboro. Azizullah J. Hussain, 24 of was arrested Oct. 20 and charged with possession of heroin and methamphetamine. Chadyck Victor Pergantis, 24, of was ar rested Oct. 20 and charged with posses sion of heroin and methamphetamine, speeding and a seat belt violation. Napoleon Freeman, 50, of Greensboro was arrested Oct. 22 and charged with reckless conduct. Brian Anthony Dorsey, 32, of Greensboro was arrested Oct. 22 and charged with possession of marijuana (less than one ounce). MORGAN COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE Scottie James Sims, 50, of Watkinsville was arrested Oct. 22 and charged with DUI, driving while license suspended and failure to maintain insurance. William Eugene Bacot, 33, of Madison was arrested Oct. 22 and charged with disor derly conduct. Gershon F. Ginsburg, 55, of Sante Fe, New Mexico, was arrested Oct. 18 and charged with possession of methamphetamine and driving while license suspended. Scouts Continued from A4 And, strangely, some in our society might even question if Scouting is still relevant. “For almost 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law,” states the national BSA office. “Today, these values arejust as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, and citi zenship skills that influence adult lives.” The Boys Scouts believe their members should “try new things, provide service to others, build self-confi dence, and reinforce ethical standards.” The Scout Oath advises to “do your best; do your duty to God and Country; help other people at all times; keep phys ically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.” The Scout Law encourages young people to become “trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obe dient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent.” Old- fashioned traits still badly needed in today’s uncivil times. What is the future of Scouting in our ever-chang ing society? Truthfully, I really don’t know. Scouting has always been family oriented and our society wants full opportu nities for all women and girls. Many of us don’t want the membership and influence of Girl Scouts to be hurt in any way. Both organizations play important roles. At any rate, I continue to treasure my time spent in Eatonton’s Troop 64, way back in the early 1960s. Those days of learning new things and being with boy hood friends in the great out doors are not to be forgotten. And I need to especially thank my old Scoutmaster, David Thomas, for the time he spent in leading us. We owe a special debt of gratitude to Scoutmasters and the Scouting movement, and to all those who choose to work with young people. For years I heard Red Sox fans whine about the curse. “Oh my, how we’ve suffered since Babe Ruth was sold to the Yankees,” went the refrain. Red Sox fans endured 86 years between titles, butthey did play in the fall classic four times (1946,1967,1975 and 1986). Red Sox fans endured 28 years between post seasons from 1918 until 1946, but the Braves actually had a longer drought of 34 years between post seasons from 1914 to 1948. They also had another drought of 32 years between postseason wins between 1959 and 1991. Nobody much cares that the Red Sox won five titles between 1903 and 1918, but they did. They have also won three since 2004.1 guess the curse is over now, eh. The Braves have only won three in the entire history of the franchise, and one of those when the team played in Boston, so it’s hard to claim that one. While we’re talking about Boston, lets compare the Hawks to the Celtics. The Celtics have won 17 NBA titles; the Hawks have one title, and that one when the team played in St. Louis. Weshouldn’tevenbringup hockey, since Atlanta can’t keep a team. But let’s be thorough in our misery. The Boston Bruins have won 25 division titles and six Stanley Cups. Neither of Atlanta’s two NHL franchises ever won a postseason game. Which brings us back to football. My Falcons made the play offs for the first time in 1978, and lost to Justin’s stinking Cowboys. They returned in 1980 ... and lost a game they should have won to Justins’s stink ing Cowboys. I was dating a girl from Dallas who loved the Cowboys at the time, and she called me right after the game. “I can’t talk to you right now,” I said. Danny White was probably the ruin ofthat relationship. The Falcons had a real good shot at winning a Super Bowl that year, and a win overthe Cowboys wouldhave put them against an Eagles team they had beaten 20-17 in the regular season. “C’est la vie,” say the old folks. As a result of all that futility, the Falcons have winning records against only six teams: Bills, Panthers, Chargers, Saints, Giants and Jets. The Falcons have lost to the Rams 47 times while winning just 28. They have lost 14 of 16 to the Colts. And last year, the team seemed near an apotheosis of sorts with a 28-3 lead in Super Bowl 51. Most Falcons fans were, at best, cautiously optimistic. Back in 1986, I was cau tiously optimistic about the outcome of the Super Bowl because I had New England and28 points when thegame started. The Bears won 46-10, and I swore off gambling forever. Thanks, Patriots. So, when the Donta Hightower sacked Ryan and causedafumbleinthefourth quarter, I wasjustwaitingfor the other shoe to drop.
