Greene County High School teacher Megan Hollingsworth was over joyed to hear her name called as the district’s Teacher of the Year by Greene County Schools Superintendent Dr. Chris Houston. Houston gave Hollingsworth a hug before presenting her with the Teacher of the Year plaque. Hollingsworth, a multi cultural and AP literature teacher, has taught at the high school for two years. Prior to coming to work in Greene County, she taught a variety of courses at Alcovy High School in Covington for 10 years. Hollingsworth’s philos ophy of teaching is simple: Whatever you do, you must make learning relevant and viable to your students. “I continually lookforways to reach and encourage my students both as a group and as individual learners, and I continually look for ways to improve my own knowl edge,” Hollingsworth said. “My goal is to build young thinkers and citizens who are confident and successful as they venture into college and careers, and I have found that challenging my students while addressing their spe cific needs helps to create success which they mightnot have even dreamed possible before my class.” Hollingsworth earned her Bachelor’s degree in theater and English from Georgia College and State University and a master’s degree in English education from Georgia State University. Outside of school, she is happily married to her husband, Chip, with whom she enjoys managing a menagerie of talented pets as well as traveling, singing andfightingforsocialjustice. In addition to recogniz ing the district’s Teacher of the Year, Superintendent Houston along with each school’s principal also honored each school- level Teacher of the Year (TOTY). This year’s Teachers of the Year were Lisa Horton, Greene County CBJ Preschool TOTY, Justin Brow, Greensboro Elementary School TOTY, Isaac Givens, Anita White Carson Middle School TOTY and Kasey Ross, Union Point STEAM Academy TOTY. Horton, a special educa tion teacher for Preschool, has spent 10 years in the teaching profession and more than 20 years serv ing children and adults with special needs. She is a 1984 graduate of Patterson High School in Baltimore, Maryland, and a 1989 Towson State University bachelor of science graduate. After completing her master of science degree in educa tion in 2013, Horton was inductedintotheGoldenKey International Honor Society and returned to school to complete her specialist in education degree in edu cational leadership in 2017 through the Greene County School System. She is happily married to Kent. Their family of five includes her mom, Daisy Daniel, and four children, Iesha, Brianna, Kent Jamal and Jonathan. Horton was a participant of the 2011-2012 (GLISI) Georgia Leader Institute for School Improvement cohort. During the 2016- 2017 school year, she par ticipated in the Greene County Summer Leadership Retreat: “Learning and Leading the Greene Way.” She has received numerous agency and departmental awards for her service to enhance the daily lives of individuals with disabilities through her performance, actions and commitment. During Horton’s teaching career, she has received the Program for Exceptional Children Teacher of the Year Award, perfect attendance awards from 2010-2012, 2012-2013 Title I School Achievement Award and 2015-2016 Distinguished Certificate of Achievement for Great Student Learning Objective (SLO) gains. Brown is a native of Greensboro and a product of the Greene County School System. He attended the University of West Georgia, where he earned abachelor’s degree in business education. He then earned a master’s degree from Troy University with a focus in adult education. Brown currently teaches fifth grade mathematics at Greensboro Elementary School. Previously, Brown taught for five years at Anita White CarsonMiddle School, where he served as abusiness teacher and mathematics teacher. In addition to being an elementary school teacher, Brown serves as a tutor to nontraditional college stu dents, amentor andthetrack and field coach for both the middle and high school pro grams. He also serves as an advisor to the Greene County Junior Leadership Academy. Brown is a member of the Georgia Council of Teachers ofMathematics (GCTM) and the Professional Association ofGeorgiaEducators (PAGE). He also attends Stronghold Christian Church, where he participates in young adult and music ministries. Givens graduated from Piedmont College in 2014, with a bachelor’s degree in middle grades education with a concentration in sci ence and social studies. This school year marks Givens’ fourth year teach ing at Anita White Carson Middle School as well as his thirdyearcoachingboysbas- ketball at the middle school. Outside of teaching and coaching, Givens enjoys spendingtimewithhis family and friends as well as attend- ing sporting events and exploringthe great outdoors. Ross holds a bachelor’s degree from Piedmont College in early childhood education, a master’s of education degree in early childhood education from Georgia College and State University and an education specialist degree in cur riculum and instruction from Piedmont College. In January, Ross will begin the School Leadership cer tification program through Valdosta State University as part of the Greene County Leadership Academy. Ross has taught for 13 years, with 11 of those years at Union Point STEAM Academy. She taught third grade in Newton County before coming to Greene County. Currently, she serves as the EIP teacher for kin dergarten, third and fifth grades. While at UPSA, Ross has also taught fourth grade math, first grade and second grade. Ross serves on the school’s leadership team and is the PBIS team leader for UPSA. She also serves as a mentor coordinator, after school program coordinator and an active member of the school’s PTO. Each school-level Teacher of the Year received a plaque during the Teacher of the Year Reception held Oct. 30 in the Greene County Preschool cafeteria.
