Friday, November 17, 2017 Lake Oconee News Page B9 For Heaven's Sake Mike Morgan, Pastor • First United Methodist Church of Greensboro m ... BUT I HATE IT WHEN THEY CALL A PENALTY ON ME Ft>R "PELAY OF LUNCH"! *‘And God said, just do it”: the Bible and pour sex life The quote in the headline is from a Time magazine article which spoke about how a number of churches are trying to encourage married couples to have more sex. The pastors quote Genesis, Chapter 2, Verse 24: A man “shall cleave unto his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” (This follows the second creation story in Genesis. You knowthatthere are two creation versions in Genesis, do you not?). One mega church in Texas holds “Sacred Sex weekends” to “learn how you can experi ence a fulfilling sex life with God’s blessing.” One church has the Thursday mandate: “read 1 Corinthians: ...how can I please you more.” The “Just do it” movement, accordingtothe Time article, is a reaction to the historical Protestant Puritanical atti tude toward sex as well as the Roman Catholic preach ment that sex is to be only for procreation purposes. If you know Christian history, you will know that there have been varied pronouncements and practices relative to the sex life of couples. Two 20th century examples would be that birth control and mas turbation are serious sins and can lead to a life in Hell. So, why am I writing about this? Sex is a factor in a couple’s life. The three most discussed subjects in marital counseling are money, sex and kids. Your attitude toward sex is influ enced by your belief system. Much of your belief system has been influenced by your religious training which has been shaped by a particular denomination or preacher. It is amazing to me to hear the variety of beliefs and prac tices that couples embrace. Often a couple will disagree Dr. John Stathas Columnist as to the quantity and style of sexual sharing. Some indi viduals are quite modest and shy, while others arehedonis- tically expressive. Like anything else in life, balance is the answer. A couple’s sex life should be reflective of the love present between them, as well as the desire and capacity of the individuals involved. This will change over time but hopefully will not be a source of arguments. Understanding and com promise are necessary; some times that is a real challenge. If God is love, then love-making is a spiritual act.Aninterestingasidehere. Did you know that when an orgasm takes place, the por tion of the brain that is acti vated is the same area that is activated by meditative prayer- atranscendentjoyful feeling? Sexcanbe sacred as a unifying connection flowing from loving hearts. Conclusion: Are you and your spouse pleased with your sex life at this age and stage ofyour respective lives? Any discussion needed? I know that is a loaded sub ject and few of you will dare address it with your signifi cant other. Communication is challenging with this subject. Don’t waste a lot of time trying to figure out what God wants in this area. You will only get confused by those who use the Bible to come up with different understandings. Just try to share your love in a way that is loving, compatible andhas some degree of consistency. “The unexamined life is not worth living” Socrates Dr. Stathas can he reached at 706-473-1780.
