Dave Brown dave@lakeoconeenews.us Given the concern over public safety regarding pit bulls, the City of Greensboro is considering a revision to its Code of Ordinances. “These are things we are con sidering and looking at doing,” said Mayor Glenn Wright at the recent November meeting of the city council “We haven’t made any decisions, yet, but we are looking at this carefully.” According to 2015 data at dogs- bite.org, pit bulls made up about 6.6 percent of the total U.S. dog population, but account accounted for 91 percent (28) of the total recorded deaths for the year. Pit bulls also accounted for nearly 75 percent of all fatal attacks during the 11-year period of 2005 to 2015. Here are some caveats of the pit bull ordinance being considered for Greensboro: Pit bull means any pit bull ter rier or Staffordshire Terrier or any mixed breed with contains an identifiable element of the breeding of pit bulls. No person shall harbor, keep or maintain with the city limits any pit bull unless it is currently registered and licensed with the Greensboro Police Department. • A registration fee is $50 and owners shall have until March 31, 2018, to register these dogs. • A pup born to a female pit bull shall be licensed and registered within six months of its birth. • While on the owner’s property, a pit bull must be securely con fined indoors or in a securely enclosed and locked pen or structure, suitable to prevent entry of young children, and designed to prevent the animal from escaping. • Pens must be 5x10 feet and must have secure sides and secure top. Such pen or structure shall pre vent the dog from being within 25 feet of the boundary line. • Any pit bull must wear a fluo rescent collar anytime they are outside the owner’s primary residence. A owner is allowed to file an appeal to reviewthe determination of the dog as a pit bull. GREENE COUNTY LOA to begin construction of high school campus TheLakeOconeeAcademy (LOA) Foundation, Inc. has met all general condi tions for approval from the United Sates Department of Agriculture (USDA) Community Facilities Direct Loan Program for a direct loan to finance the $18 million expansion of the LOA high school campus. The USDA program pro vides affordable funding to develop essential commu nity facilities in rural areas. The LOA Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to raisingfunds to enrich the educational expe rience of every LOA student, will enter into a long-term lease agreement with Lake Oconee Academy, Inc. This contractual relationship meets the specifications addressed in the charter renewal for self-funding future facilities expansions without drawing additional facilities funds from the school district. The campus expansion includes two newbuildings - one that will house adminis trative offices, 17high school classrooms including two science labs and a student center with a dining, study and gym facility for student activities. Land grading and construction are underway. ‘We are very pleased to continue the vision of LOA as a place of educational excellence in rural Georgia with the expansion of the high school campus,” said Betsy Peck, LOAFoundation chairman. “This is a very exciting time for the current high school students and all those who will followin their footsteps.” In conjunction with secur ing the financing for the construction project, the LOA Foundation has suc cessfully met its $2 million capital campaign goal in order to continue the learn ing environments which have made LOA a unique and successful school. The LOA Foundation would like to thank the hundreds of donors that contributed to reach the current total of $2.3 million in donations. The campaign is ongoing and naming opportunities are still available. The focus of campaign dollars will be onimplementingup-to-date technology in the facility, creating an environment that fosters mobility and collaboration in the high school, incorporating state- of-the-art safety upgrades between thenewfacility and the original campus, and recreational green space. LOA has provided this rendering of what the high school building will look like. “It will be extremely ben eficial to our academic program to have a dedi cated high school facility for students in grades nine through twelve,” said Dr. Otho Tucker, CEO of Lake Oconee Academy. “In 2007, LOA started with 11 kinder garten students, and nowwe have the opportunity to pro vide the highest quality edu cation to over 900 students. We have been successful in accomplishing the mission that was put forth for LOA -toincreasestudentachieve- ment by building a culture of high expectations for all students.
