Sutherland closed with a 5-under 66 on Sunday for a one-stroke victory over Vijay Singh at Phoenix Country Club. “I don’t even know. It’s like a whirlwind thing. It’s amazing,” Sutherland said. “I mean, the names on this trophy are incredible. I’ve seen it, and to be on that list is just, I can’t even put words to it, it’s just amazing.” The only player to shoot 59 in PGA TOUR Champions history, Sutherland had 15 top-10 finishes this season, finishing second three times and third twice. A professional can find a way to escape disaster, but the general rule 550 p t s . / 1 top tens for an amateur is that trouble leads to more trouble. The one shot that causes the amateur the most trouble is when a tee shot goes into the woods. We’re so FedEx Cup Standings continued... mad when our shot is out of the fairway and in a tree that it usually leads to a 51/ second erratic shot. Consequently, most people race up to find the shot, just grab a club and hack away. Instead, a more sensible plan is the best course of action. Picking the right club with the proper loft is essential. Too much loft could lead to your shot going into the overhanging leaves. Not enough loft will result in the ball getting hung up in the woods again. Harris, then a junior, searches for an open teammate during one of the Titans' games of the 2016-17 season. Titans Continued from Cl with some more size. Clayton Hinspeter has also returned from injury. Neither of them saw any minutes to speak of last year. Brooker said Lovelace and Hinspeter could be integral components of the Titans’ game plans this season, though. “Both those guys are gonna be nice additions for us and help us out with our depth and hopefully our rebound ing and our toughness level,” Brooker said. “It just makes us a little deeper and gives us more options to go to, a little more variety, person nel-wise. I’m excited to see what they’re gonna be able to do since we didn’t really have them last year much.” The Titans have also wel comed a couple additions from the middle school team. Sophomore Jackson Cown said he thinks the returning varsityplayers andtheteam’s freshmen have meshed well together so far. “It’s a small school, so we know everyone,” Cown said. “We know them personally. It’s good to have them on the team, good to have some new faces.” Last season, the Titans won just one game, a 56-52 nail-biter at home against Glascock County. They return seven seniors to this year’s squad. One of them, point guard K. J. Harris, said the seniors somewhat have a sense of urgency to win more during their final stand at LOA. More important to Harris, though, is seeing the team grow and develop regardless ofthe final score. “I want to win, but I want to make sure that we’re getting better,” Harris said. “There’s not so much emphasis on, ‘Man, we should’ve won this game. Man, we should’ve done this and that.’ It’s just more, ‘Hey, did we get better this night? Did we really do and execute what we were supposed to do?’ As long as we can leave it out there on the court and then look in the mirror and be able to say, ‘We did what we were supposed to. We executed,’ then I think that’s the main thing.” The senior leadership of Harris and the six other veterans will be crucial for the Titans. Brooker said that group will shoulder a consid erable amount of responsibil ity this season. ‘We’re gonna lean on them a good bit,” he said. ‘We did have three or four freshmen that played a lot of minutes last year, but we’re definitely gonna lean on those seniors to hopefully be good exam ples on and off the court and provide a boost.” Harris demonstrated some of that leadership in a recent interview. When asked about his personal goals for the 2017-18 season, Harris said individual accolades don’t matter to him. “It’s easy for people to look at the awards, but the main thing I want to do is just get better and I want to help my team,” Harris said. “As long as I’mbeingaleader on the court and offthe court and showing the guys kind ofthe right way, because I am a senior and this is my last year, I can kind of leave a legacy. My main thing is just continue to get better.” Cown said he needs to “lock down on defense” and commit fewer turnovers this year. As for overall team goals, Cown did not shy away from saying he hopes the Titans can turn around from a one- win season and accomplish big things. “It’d be cool to make the playoffs for our region this year andbeatsometeams that we didn’t get to beat last year and have some redemption,” Cown said. “That’d be fun.” Brooker said the primary goal for LOA is grinding through the season and finding ways to continually improve. “I think [the goal is] just to continue to come out and get better every single day,” Brooker said. “Obviously, we’d love to win more than one game. We’re gonna do every thing in our power to continue to go about things the way that we feel is necessary to be successful long-term and short-term.” The Titans open the season Nov. 21 at Mount de Sales Academy in Macon. During the early portion ofthe sched ule, LOA will face Athens Academy, George Walton Academy and a handful of othertalented teams in atour- nament at Tattnall County. A tough non-region sched ule could help the Titans sharpen their skills and be better prepared when they face the likes of region opponents Greene County, Washington-Wilkes and Warren County. “I think it’s gonna be good experience, especially for the younger guys,” Cown said. “I think it’ll be a really good challenge. That’ll help with our in-region teams, just to see teams that are better and bigger and stronger.” Brooker saidheis confident his players can fight hard in those tough matchups and finish with a better season than they experienced last year. “It’s a good group of guys,” he said. “Obviously, last year was our first year as a varsity program. This year, hopefully, we’ll take a big jump as a second-year program with that experience under our belt. We had a fair number of young guys that played a lot last year as well so, hopefully, they’ll make a jump this year. Hopefully, we can be more competitive and win some more games and continue to take strides in the program.” SAVE $10 Wild Alaskan Smoked Sockeye 1 lb.
