Friday, December 14,2017 Lake Oconee News Page All GREENE COUNTY Cagle, Jones congratulate Greene C&CA Dave Brown dave@lakeoconeenews.us It’s technically not the Greene County College and Career Academy, but the Greene College and Career Academy because it serves students in another county as well as a private school. And it is technically not a char ter school, but rather a Strategic Waiver School System that pro vides local school districts with greater governance flexibility as a means to increase students achievement. Nevertheless, Lt. Governor Casey Cagle - considered the godfather of charter schools - recently wel comed Greene College and Career Academy to the club. “I am excited that Greene County will build Georgia’s next College and Career Academy,” said Lt. Governor Casey Cagle. “In today’s rapidly evolving econ omy, expandingthe proven success of our CCAs is more important than ever so that we can provide all Georgia’s students with the relevant skills they need. To grow a workforce that is second to none, I am committed to providing every student across our state access to a College and Career Academy by 2020.” In 2007 Casey introduced the concept of charter systems, accord ing to georgia.gov, allowing school districts total freedom and flexibil ity to establish a complete system of choice for students and families. Using accountability contracts designed at the local level, charter systems have proven it is possible to offer students new educational opportunities, allowing them to fully achieve their individual potential. Today, nearly 30 percent of Georgia’s students are enrolled in 42 charter systems across our state. After the Technical College System of Georgia announced a $3.15 million grant, Senator Burt Jones praised Greene County Schools for their successful part nership with Athens Technical College. “Greene County College and Career Academy is bringing together leaders from our commu nity to develop a skilled workforce that will allow our economy to thrive for years to come,” said Jones. “I’m proud of Greene County Schools, local industry, and the many partners who are makingthis significant investment in educating our students for the jobs that will lead our community’s growth in the future. “Thanks to Lt. Governor Cagle for his leadership in establishing Georgia’s College and Career Academy Network, and for once again recognizing the success of a worthy Middle Georgia school system with this honor.” Cagle praised the partnership between local school systems, tech nical colleges and business, which has proven effective in increasing student achievement and work force development across our state. Because of Cagle’s initiatives, Greene County High School will house the 43rd College and Career Academy in Georgia. Approximately 20,000 students are enrolled in college and career academies across the state, boast ing graduation rates as high as 99 percent. College and Career Academies are effectively developingprograms to train high school students for in-demand careers. Students find that challenging, hands-on programs provide greater rele vancy and value, which not only lead to higher graduation rates but also rewarding professional opportunities. The specified train- ingfor students is attractive to local businesses, and communities bene fit from developing ahighly-trained and skilled workforce. “Our students deserve every opportunity for academic suc cess - and with the creation of Georgia’s three new College and Career Academies, we are one step closer to ensuring all students across our state have access to these world-classlearninginstitutionsby 2020,” said Cagle. “These school systems have embraced innovation in the class room, bringing business and com munity leaders together to ignite economic growth for many years to come.” Dave Brown/Staff Greene College & Career Academy CEO John Ellenberg said the application process reflected determination. Business community deserves kudos for grant Dave Brown dave@lakeoconeenews.us Greene County Board of Education Chairman Mike Lynch and Greene College and Career Academy board of governance chairman Larry Kludt took a few minutes to bask in the after glow of getting the $3.15 million grant last Friday, Dec. 8 at the Athens Technical School facility in Greensboro and then thanked the community for supporting the district through the grant applica tion process. “This shows us that we can com pete at the state level and win,” Lynch said. I believe this also shows what we can do in this county when we all come together and work to a common goal,” said Lynch. Kludt also spoke about the sym biotic relationship between the business community and the school system in helping secure the grant. “This was a blending of the schools and the business commu nity,” said Kludt. “When we worked on the grant application, I visited the successful C&CAs around the state andfound thetheywere inlockstep withlocal industries. “That’s what we did here. I never left a local business without them reaching out and asking how they could help.” Kludt said the C&CA received 51 letters of commitment. Taking over just one year after a tumultuous run by the previous Board of Education wracked with dysfunction, Lynch deflected praise of his leadership of the new BOE. “We had two carryovers from the last board, and they were each 150 percent behind the C&CA,” said Lynch. “Were goingto get aheadby look ing forward instead of backward.” Greene County School System Superintendent Dr. Chris Houston said in a statement, ‘Were not just establishing a college and career academy, we are building a climate andculture from crayons to college, and every student is capable and will be prepared to go to college.” Grant Continued from A1 working on the presentation. We had practice sessions and several rehearsals. “Thebottomlineiswemade it happen because several entities in the community talked and worked together in a collaborative way. We made it happen because the program is goodfor students.” Greene College and Career Academy’s application to the Technical College System of Georgia’s competitive College and Career Academy grant was approved last week fol lowing its presentation to the TCSG Board of Directors. The TCSG awarded a $3.15 million award to help estab lish the college and career academy at Greene County High School, which will also serve students from other schools in the area. Eight counties applied for the award and three were selected, including Greene County. The selection process included an extensive, 14-part application and a formal pre sentation to a panel of TCSG college and career academy evaluators. “Before and during the application process, our com munity and business partners worked diligently to write a grant that would benefit all students living in Greene County,” said GCCA CEO John Ellenberg. ”Our application clearly showed our determination to be progressive in the way our teachers teach and our students learn. This Academy is going to be a great place for our students to attend. “It’s a wonderful thing when our community unites to ensure educational oppor tunities that will lead to the prosperity of our students.” Accordingto apress release from Greene County Schools, the doors of College and Career Academy will officially open to students in August 2018. In the meantime, agreat deal of work will be done to prepare the facility to offer state-of-the-art industry labs to meetthe needs ofthe indus tries served in our community. Initially, there will be 14 pathways available to stu dents, including agriculture, audio visual, automotive, business management, con struction, cosmetology, culi nary arts, customer service, early college essentials, engi neering, health care, JROTC, manufacturing operations and welding. “The career pathway pro grams to be offered at GCCA will be aligned with the needs of local business and indus try. Simply put, GCCA will educate and train students by providing current and future skill sets neededforjob oppor tunities right here in Greene County,” said Ellenberg. “The result will be awell-ed- ucated, highly trained work force that is the key to our community’s growth and success in the future. It is an exciting time to be a student in Greene County.” The Greene College and Career Academy has its own Governing Board consist ing primarily of local busi ness representatives. It is a joint venture with Athens Technical College and part nerships with the Taliaferro County School System and Lake Oconee Academy. “The Greene College and Career Academy in partner ship with Athens Technical College and other commu nity partners will provide opportunities for high school students to explore techni cal pathways. This career academy will not only benefit Greene County, but also the state of Georgia,” said Dr. Andrea Daniel, President of Athens Technical College. “Athens Technical College is extremely excited to be a part of bringing the Career Academy to Greene County. I would like to thank the business partners, the Greene County Board of Education and the staffof Greene County School System for all of their hard work on this effort.” Kludt thanked the community for supporting the district through the grant application process. “I would like to thank our many community volunteers, our business community part ners, our school district staff and many other community service organizations (e.g. Greene County Chamber of Commerce, Atlas Ministry, the Pete Nance Boys and Girls Club, etc.), our partners, Taliaferro County Schools and Lake Oconee Academy, our colleagues at Athens Technical College and the Greene County Board of Education to name a few,” said Kludt.
