This was the first year the event took place during day light hours due to availability of the Madison Morgan Cultural Center Annex. After a morning of cold tempera tures and rain mixed with snow flurries, families were met with sunny skies for the afternoon event. Mrs. Claus, elves and an ice princess assisted children in creatingimaginary dwellings out ofboxes, candy and frost ing. Member Kate Roberts dressed as Mrs. Claus for the third year in arow, and Karen Strelecki, gallery curator, adorned herself in sparkling white garb to representthe ice princess. Student volunteers dressed as elves. “It’s just a fun community event,” Strelecki said and added that she felt it was another exciting opportunity to add to holiday happenings taking place in Madison that day, including the Madison Holiday Parade. Small household boxes and cardboard tubes made up the freestyle structures, and participants indulged in gum drops, licorice and graham crackers while building to the tune of classical holiday music. Although the guild makes no profit from the event, Strelecki said she hopes the event will continue for another 17 years. “It’s a tradition,” Roberts said. “It’s reallyjustto benefit the community.” Since beauty is only in the eye of the beholder, three prizes were given to the makers of the most unique houses. The Madison Artist Guild invites the public to attend their next event, January 12, atthe MAGGallery. They will host Athens folk artist Peter Loose. Refreshments will be served.
