He challenged the students to stay hungry and stay com mitted to the process. “There is a reason that you are sitting in this seat tonight, and wherever you go, wherever you progress, I don’t know what colleges you are going to. But, like I said, remember your humble beginnings; remember to stay hungry and committed to the process and lastly remember that it is bigger than you; andalways, always, always be a game changer,” Curran said. Next, the three honorees shared their stories. Quanderious Briscoe spoke first. “Do you all know the dif ference between living and existing?” Briscoe asked. “Living is simply living with a purpose. You are embrac ing life for what it truly is. Existing, however, is the exact opposite. Existing is living without a purpose.” Briscoe’s spoke about how PNBGC taught him about the motivation and deter mination that he needed to help him succeed. “So now I tell kids what I tell myself every day. If you know what you’re worth, go out and get what you’re worth, but be willing to take the hit. And not sayingyou’re not where you want to be because ofhim or her or any body, cowards do that, and that isn’t you. You’re better than that,” Briscoe said. Joshua Wade also spoke during the ceremony. Joshua’s story was one of loss. After losing his sister, he realized how important his support system at the MMBGC really was. “I want to bring awareness to young kids by starting a program called dating vio lence,” Wade said. “Dating violence is a program where you help kids in relationships.” Wade wants to influence younger students to stay involved in the Boys and Girls Club and emphasized theimportanceofthelessons learned there. Before announcing the BGCNCG overall Youth of the Year, the students lis tened to BGCNCGchairman of the board of directors, Mike Conrads. Conrads imparted words of wisdom to the students while giving the students three tokens to remind them of his words. The first token was a rock with the words carpe diem on it. The words seize the day are his personal motto. The second token was a gold turtle figure, which was used to remind the students that sometimes they are going to have to stick their necks out to make progress. The third token was a compass to help the students remember where they came from and to help them find their way and remind them to check and see if they are on the right path. Each Youth ofthe Year stu dent receivedascholarship, a laptop and professional dress attire.
