back in the day and Allen

the General Store, it’s easy
to forget the pressures of our
usual days.
While that era required
more physical labor for
simple jobs, there always
seemed to be time to laugh,
sing and visit.
Keeping the southern
hospitality intact, daugh
ter, Sandy Pierce Denham
greeted all visitors with
her smile and pamphlet
explaining each building and
encouraging folks to stop by
for snacks and hot chocolate
that her daughter, Cassie
Denham Taylor and cousin,
Lane Bridges, happily shared
with all.
A small table was set up
with information showing if
some would like to donate.
All donations are used
to fill the Eatonton Fire
Department bags for
Christmas toys given to
those in need.
This year, as in the past,
daughter Tabitha Bridges
handled this Christmas toy
project asyetanother expres
sion of generosity the family
shares. Lovely ladies from as
farasGwinnettCounty(Mary
Simmons) and Covington
(Anne Lott) as well as Kim
Jackson (Madison) joined
local favorite volunteers of
all genres, and Sylbie Yon
and Susan Larson, who
madetimetovisitand delight
even more visitors with
their Victorian dresses while
keeping those dresses out of
the mud!
Everything changes, yet
time stands still in Stepback.
Those who missed the open
house at Stepback this year
will likely forget what they
were doing on this rainy,
cold day...those who made
the time to visit will probably
be relivingthe visit, as well as
the heritage of our past, for a
long time to come.
Sharing this gift of
Stepback began on a whim
in late 1990 with that first
cabin built and is blessing
family, friends and visitors
years later. Wherever you
look, treasures are found. An
era rescued from oblivion by
a man who appreciates each
tool and quilt and the hands
that last used them.
A challenge is there, what
legacy will we leave to those
who come next?
