they wanted to thank - The
Elks Lodge; Pat Sellers, the
mechanic who worked on
all of the cars; Nick Hicks,
who kept all the cars clean;
the sheriff s department for
watching overthe buildings;
the community for coming
and enjoying the museum;
and, of course, Chuck Sapper.
Generosity continued to
flow out of Memory Lane
Car Museum all the way up
to the closing of the doors
for the final time. During
my final visit, I watched as
guests viewed The Smiths’
collection with excitement
in their eyes. I wandered
around the merchandise
selection, listeningto Sapper
as he encouraged a child
to take a model car from a
basket telling him Merry
Christmas. Sapper and Elks
Lodge volunteers reminded
the guests that even the
final donations would go to
charity.
“Jerry and I are inching
on in age, and nobody likes
to admit that they need to
make plans that they’re not
going to be here one of these
days. Nobody likes to face
that reality, but it is a reality,
and, unfortunately, Jerry
has emphysema, which is
incurable,” June said.
The decision to close
Memory Lane was not an
easy one. It was one that has
been filled with many tears
for all those involved.
“We decided, OK, we built
this together through the
years; we’ve had more fun
than you can even imagine,”
said June. ‘We both love the
cars. They’re like our babies,
and this is absolutely break
ing our hearts, both of us, to
close this down to sell off the
cars and the memorabilia.
Wefind ourselves atdifferent
moments, the tear s flowing.”
Jerry and June’s collection
of cars and memorabilia will
be sold at a no reserve auction
through Greensboro Auto
Auction March 22, 23 and
24 in Greensboro, North
Carolina.
“Jerry says were not going
to go up there and have a
boohoo thing. We’re just
going to go up there and have
a big ole party,” said June.
Jerry and June’s hope is
that the cars and keepsakes
willbringasmuchjoyto their
next owners as they have to
them.
